What are some common misconceptions that new recruits have coming into bootcamp where they think they are doing something good that will impress their commander but really it just annoys them?  For example getting your head shaved.

Chances are unless you are frequently in trouble or have face to face contact daily, your Company Commander won't know your name. I was 'Glasses' until I graduated. I think it is best that way, you do not have to impress anyone... just enough to graduate. Take in everything you learn in boot camp and do your best not to lose your military baring at your first unit. That will impress. 9 years later I still have it. Even if no says it, my Marks show it. I do not know if it is a compliment but I have been told I'd make a good Marine.. maybe cause I like eating crayons? Good luck.

    I'm currently at A School(graduating a DC3 on Thursday). I have a direct answer to your question.

There's former Company Commanders here right now and almost to a tee, they don't remember a thing you did in boot camp. They don't even remember most of the stupid stuff they may have SINGLED YOU OUT FOR and made you do(like play "I Spy" in the galley or have you mop the grass). Actually, we were completing some ALP stuff today and it was headed up by a former CC(she just left Cape May within the last year). There are 3 students in my class that had her as a CC and she doesn't remember a single thing about any of them.

Long story short, to answer your question, she said there's nothing you can do to impress a CC other than come physically prepared and know your required knowledge. I'm paraphrasing, but at the end of the day, their goal is to break you down and build you up. Not individually, but as a group, a unit. So just come in and know your stuff. That's how you impress them(and it helps you stay out of theirs crosshairs). haha.
