Pretty excited to be a Coastie Mom even though I'm an over planner! My Son ships out August 9th on his Grandmother's 90th Birthday! After reading here, I know not to book my tickets months in advance.... like I normally would! How do Holidays like Christmas etc work in the Coast Guard. Sorry if this is a silly question. I don't want to put pressure on my son by asking him Graduation and Holiday questions.

If you can fly southwest then book your flight at least four weeks in advance, they will let you move the flight at no charge or you can canx the flight and bank the credit. We did not do this and paid almost double by waiting just a week longer to book.
In the military some one always has the duty. If a ship is afloat then the holiday is spent with the crew. If a ship is in port people are still required to be there to man the watch.
The best way to think about holidays, is a holiday is when you can celebrate it together not the actual date that it falls on.

I just booked tickets last Sunday for next Sunday. I paid less then $300. That is Wisconsin to Orlando for a cruise. I always fly Southwest. I didn't book my ticket to graduation, Texas to Philly, until 2 weeks before. If all goes well, graduation for your newly minted Coastie will be September 30th. Holidays are hard to say because we have no clue where he well be assigned or what your travel capabilities are. What if he gets Guam?? Never mind that he'll be the new guy but could you imagine the plane tickets? I agree with M1 you learn to celebrate Christmas in August, 6 month birthdays, thanksgiving 2 days before Easter... you become really flexible. Our you get lucky and their unit is only a 2 hour drive from home and they get to see you on the exact day. There are many variables, very few include intense planning.
A friend of mine bought plane tickets to go visit her Coastie in Alaska. Almost $1,500 on tickets.... he got orders and will be transferring before the trip! She isn't going because she can't afford hotels and a rental car and eating out. She thought all of that would be covered by staying with her son.
