Does your recruiter have you pass the physical test before you can enter the DEP? Do you have to run the 1.5 mile, do pushups and situps?

The physical fitness assessment (PFA) can't be conducted until you've had time to prepare, and we're not authorized to have you prepare officially until you've signed the the fitness waiver and passed a MEPS physical exam. Per the scoring instruction they are supposed to provide you with, you'll see that the PFA is to be conducted when you have about 30 days left before attending basic training. The PFA is not a mandated item to be able to swear into the DEP, but some recruiting offices may use that as a screening tool.

Thanks. My stepson is going Monday to swear into DEP (and has a June 28th ship date for basic) and said he has to do the run, pushups and sit-ups also. He's been working out and is good on the run and sit-ups but is between 28-32 on the pushups each time. Just seeing if he comes up a couple short if his recruiter will push back his basic date. He's super excited and ready to go and just don't want any delays.

We only push back the date if an applicant completely bombs the Physical Fitness Assessment. The biggest issue I have seen in applicants is with the run. If your son is doing 28 push ups on the PFA and doing good on everything else, he is good to go IMO.

June is hot in NJ. Sounds like your son will do fine. I believe too many people sweat the small stuff. Tell him to do his best and he will.

Thanks guys for the advice! We currently live in Florida so he is used to the hot summers.
