Hi everyone, my husband was in the Marines for 5 years and recieved Honorable Discharge before we met, got married and had a baby boy. My parents met in the Army and I've got all sorts of family in the military, but I've never been a military wife. Here's the question: Is it true that non rate is essentially the ONLY way of getting into CG besides FS? My husband scored great on ASVAB but he failed his color vision test. He failed it when entering the Marines, but they let him take it again and he "passed." (he definitely has a red/green color vision deficiency) He was an Intel Specialist (E-5) in USMC but he wants a new career in CG. (besides, they won't let him do intel with color vision deficiencies.) He is interested in MST, YN, and DC. Well- he was interested in HS as well but that has been eliminated. I know that there a lot of unknowns even when you enter the military with a specific rate, but it seems extra scary knowing he'll be non rate. Just seems like we'll be tossed into an ocean of uncertainty, and it also feels like he would be one of the first to have to leave in an emergency situation versus someone settled into a specific job. Hopefully someone can clear up some of this for me! The CG recruiter said he would go in as a non rate E-3 (that's the best he could offer going in as prior service without a rate). Is this a good deal? He is 28 now and time seems to be of the essence- considering last year's CG recruiting close-up. Any comments/suggestions/advice welcome!

    Yes.

    It's the only deal.

Being a nonrate does not equal front line infantry. He won't be assigned to a unit as cannon fodder, so don't worry. If he decides to join, he job will be general duties aboard the unit. He'll have qualifications to earn, toilets to scrubs, bulkheads to paint, dishes to wash, and he will train, train, train, and train while doing whatever missions his unit does. After 4 months he can put him name on an "A" school list. The job selection will be limited because he's colorblind, and he'll have a year and a half to 2 year wait for school.

E3 is the best that any branch of service will let him have for prior service time.

The good news is that he will be eligible to place his name onto a waiting list for A school in pretty quick order.

I am a prior service Marine.  The whole nonrate thing kinda freaked me out too, until I figured out the reason for the whole thing.  While a nonrate, I worked as a deck hand.  I had an opportunity to actually see what the various rates did, day to day, and make my decision from there.

I ended up picking the medical rating, after taking two years to consider my career path.  I am glad that I did, as 20 years later, I still love my job and coming to work every day.  When picking ratings, please urge your husband to go with the career field that he is interested in, not the one with the shortest waiting list.  While I feel that all jobs in the Coast Guard are needed an noble, one has to consider that there is a reason that some jobs have very short waiting periods(long sea tours, type of duty, and etc).

Color blindness is something that will severely limit your husband's career choices... but that is true in any branch of service.
