Just a few q's about A school. Is it likely that you will go to A school for an MST rate before your 4 years are up? changing the subject a bit, if I wanted to go to florida after bootcamp, is it likely that would happen? thanks!

The MST A school list is currently an 18-24 month wait (251 ppl on the list), so yes it is likely that you will go to school before your 4 years are up. They have been taking 8 ppl a class lately. Going to FL is just as likely as not going to FL, luck of the draw out of boot camp.

Last time I looked at the MST A School list, it was a 24 month wait, give or take, but as Browns24 said, you would most likely go before your four years are up. My oldest daughter enlisted in 2006....the wait for MST A School at that time was 12 to 18 months. She waited more like 20 months but was able to work as an MST for the final two years of her four year enlistment. And that time she spent waiting to go to school.....working as a non-rate.....was a great experience. She was on a buoy tender in Alaska during that time and then went to an icebreaker after A School. She loved the sea-going life. : ) Underway is the only way. hehe And as far as going to Florida after bootcamp, again, like Browns said, it's pretty much the luck of the draw. I suspect Florida is on alot of people's wish lists so that's something to keep in mind. Florida is awesome, by the way. Have you been there? Or maybe are you from there? We lived in Orlando for a couple years and loved going out to Port Canaveral to check out the CG cutters.

O.K., During BC at some point you can request on a Data Sheet a District. You can also add some comments, maybe like getting a particular Ship or Unit. No Guarantees, I know. Now once I get called to my "A" School do I get to request a District or Unit then to?

Also, If you do really well at BC or at "A" School does that enhance you chances for any of your first choices of District, Ship, Station or an opportunity to come your way?

There are certain things that will move lists around as how you get to pick your unit out of A school. But you will be given a list of available billets. Hopefully if you have 12 billets, 12 classmates, you all want something different. But you do get to pick something in order of your class standing. But people coming from overseas bump up, people on a ship are next, people on land after that... there is a weird way it is sorted out, not too cut & dry. But you do get to see what is available and hopefully you are all looking for something different and voila, you all can get what you want.

In short, it is a crap shoot of sorts but more of a defined crap shoot than boot camp.

    +1 Oldguard

That's pretty much how it works after "A" school too.

Macie pretty much covered how it all works. You get a list of what is available after you've been at school a few weeks and you pick from that list. My daughter had about 20 people in her MST class so they had a list of 20 billets. She never mentioned if they all got together and talked it out but I know they try and do that at some A Schools. They allow the class to discuss who might want to go where. And as Macie said, they take a number of things into consideration when deciding where you get stationed. My daughter was outconus for over a year and a half before she went to school....up in Alaska. That helped. Plus she was on a cutter all that time. That was another plus when it came to getting her first pick. Time in service as well....she'd been in almost 20 months. And doing well in A school helps, too. Nikole was honor grad of her MST class so that pretty much bumped her up to the top and she was able to get her first pick. It was interesting because she had a number of people in her MST A School class who came straight from boot camp. Apparently, there was some sort of snafu somewhere along the line and people were being offered guarantees for MST School when they weren't supposed to be getting them. By the time somebody figured it all out, they decided they couldn't really tell those people, nope sorry, you can't go straight to school after all so they just let them go. If I remember correctly, there were four boot to A's in her class. Nice for them, though! At least they didn't have to wait forever to go to school!
