My girlfriend leaves for Petaluma for YN A School at the end of April. She's been in Cape May as a FN for a little over a year now and we're done with long distance and are talking about moving in together once she gets orders after A school. When, during the course of A school, will she find out her orders? Also, since YN's are needed almost everywhere and its a pretty big rate, will she have a pretty long list of places to pick from? We're hoping she can get close to home here in Hampton Roads, Virginia.

I don't know what the YN school issues orders, but expect it to be around the halfway mark. Typically, there is a list of billets that matches the class size minus reservists. 20 active duty students, 20 active duty billets. The students are then sent to an arena where they battle for supremacy to get the orders they want. I hope that helps.

The last part sounds exciting haha. Well, if she gets stationed close to home, that's cool, if not...time to explore I guess. Thanks!

YN school is currently 8 weeks long. The billets (or picks) are known before the students arrive, because the orders need to be authenticated and HHG shipping arrangements need to be started at least 6 weeks out from graduation. Once the students arrive the billets are handed to the students to make thier selections. All choices are selected via priority per the CG Personnel Manual. In other words, the students are ranked based on thier type of pervious unit (ship, shore, overseas etc), and how long they were at the unit. This is called assignment based on priorty (in the Personel Manual). To give you an idea how the priority would work, someone coming from a cutter overseas would most likley get first pick, followed by others stationed on ships inconus by time at thier unit, then people who were stationed overseas ashore, then all others based on time in service. If she is a reservist then she will know where she is going long before going to A school. If she is Active, she will be involved with the whole "picks" process and will know where she is going by the end of the first week or early in the second week. Hope that helps.
