If you are a rate that doesn't require a security clearance, would you ever have to get one?

From my understanding, it's on an as needed basis. You don't have to have one but you just have to be eligible if you're in one of those rates. You might even get one for a little while only for when you need it and then have it taken away later. So, therefore, if your rate doesn't require eligibility, then you won't have to get one. |

So, therefore, if your rate doesn't require eligibility, then you won't have to get one. Not necessarily. Patrol Boats and Small Boat Stations require a security clearance regardless of rate. |

That may or may not be an OPSEC issue. If you go to a PB or STA you'll find out then. |

My oldest daughter went to a cutter in AK after boot camp and didn't even realize until she'd been there a number of months that she had a secret clearance. I'm not sure how she could have not known about it....but since she spent alot of time up on the bridge on watch, I'm assuming that's why she was required to have one. My younger daughter had a job in the CG that required a Top Secret clearance. That's a whole different process. She got hers in six months but I think it can take up to a year to get one normally. She was just barely 18 at the time.....didn't have much to investigate....so I guess that's why she got her TS so quickly. Laurie |
