My son has been on  MST A school list for approx 1 years. During that time he has probably moved up a dozen spots on the list. By all estimations [regardless of the approx times listed] he will not get to his A school before his 4 year enlistment is up. He is of course disappointed and looking at changing his A school selection because he is unsure if he would want to re-enlist as a nonrate...He had pretty much gone in with the idea of giving at least 2 more years to the MST job [he had assumed he would have completed A school before that]-before deciding if this would be his lifes career. I have to admit I feel bad that he is struggling with this.

Yes it is common to have to re-enlist as a non-rate for MST but if he is having second thoughts about the rate maybe he should look into another rate that would like to do...But there are others on here that waited the long wait for MST and are very happy with there choice...It is normal for ppl to change there mind about there rate... You can ask any of the active duty non rates that yes you get tired of being a non rate but you deal with it and whatever problems your having talk to your supervisor if you feel they aren't helping jus continue working your way up your command until you feel like the problem has been resolved

    Mag,

If he settles on something else for less of a wait time, I can almost guarantee this will not be his life's career. He will not be satisfied, he will not be happy. Nothing is more of a deterent to joy than being miserable all day at work. I know waiting isn't easy. Anything worth having, is worth waiting (working) for. Please tell him to REALLY REALLY REALLY weigh his options. Tell him to sit down and have a very candid conversation with his 1st class or his Chief or even an Ensign or JG in his chain of command. Not a complaint session, not something that would be described as "jumping the chain of command" just a conversation, Coastie to Coastie just getting opinions, ideas, suggestions. I know Jimmy would talk to anyone about career choices and paths, Colin has gone to his Chief, an LT on his ship, he has played Wii with an Ensign, all the while talking to them, feeding off their energy, advice, passions... Nothing at all wrong with that.

I wish you both the best of luck and patience!

My husband is in the same boat. He has been on the mst list for a year now. By the time he
becomes a third class petty officer he will be 28. It totally sucks but it is what he wants so it's worth the wait.
