Howdy,
I'm not sure if it is appropriate, but I'm going to piggy-back on this thread since it keeps all eyesight questions in one place.
My eyesight is about as bad as yours is, alexm757, and I'm wondering if you ever heard anything back from your recruiter or MEPS about a waiver?
Currently, my prescription is a -8.50 to -9.00 (no astigmatism or anything) in each eye. I'm worried that once I get down to weight for MEPS, I will be DQ'ed right away. Is anyone out there getting waivers for eyesight? I've read something or other on another forum about a young lady getting an eyesight waiver for a -9.00. However, I know that the USCG is actively seeking qualified women since they have to meet certain ratios. I am 25 years old, ASVAB of 96, some college credit and no medical conditions aside from being over-weight and having poor eyesight. I know that you guys can't tell me the likely-hood of getting a waiver since it is on a case-by-case basis, but I don't want to lose a lot of weight for nothing. I am a naturally big guy and 225lbs is a healthy BF% for me.
EDIT (1/24/12 -- 9:15pm): Forgot to say that my eyesight, with glasses on is 20/10. If I were to have -8.00 glasses, I believe I could still read the 20/20 line. Maybe I will schedule an appt. with my Dr. and see what their opinion is.
