college and on active duty? how is it???

Im going onto active duty in a few short months and have made the decision to get a masters degree through the American Military University. Has anyone done this before, how much will being on active duty limit the time for studying? any advice from those attending this? thanks a bunch!!!!! cant wait for active, so pumped!!!! haaaa |

It depends on you, and the op tempo of the unit you're at. If you are on a large cutter and away from home port for lengthy periods you may want to consider looking into distance learning classes rather than semester based online courses. Indiana University has a great DL program, AND since it's a SOCCOAST school (google it) the credits will xfer to AMU (if I remember right, they take up to 90.) |

I finished my undegrad and then did my masters degree while on active duty. As soon as my undergrad was done, I was shipped to the Navy OCS prep school and then to the CG OCS program. But for both degrees, it was all on my own time. I did get financial support but you have to make the time, and way back then, there was no internet. So when I was assigned to a shore unit, that's when I went to school. Bottom line, it is all up to you and how bad you want it. But the CG's perspective is that your job is not to go to school. Your job is wha they assign you to do. It is up to you to find the time to make it happen. Good luck! |
