I leave for BC in a week today and something has been on my mind for quite some time now. I'm going in being interested in the ME rate as I'd like to, someday, become a police officer. When I went to MEPS for my DEP, I was speaking with one of the recruiters from my office and he was saying that ME's dont really conduct much LE field work and that if I want to be out in the field I should instead strike for BM or MK. He also said the ME's usually end up "teaching firearms training and thats about it". Is this really true?? As far as actually getting out in the field and conducting boarding ops, drugs ops, and immigration ops, is a BM or an MK actually the way to go?? If anyone can shed a bit of light on this, I would appreciate it guys. Thank you!!

Yes that is true to a point jus like GMs aren't always out doin LE they clean the guns and give training on the weapons so no one gets hurt... A lot of the LE stuff is done by non rates, MK and BM... Give or take a few rates when you are on a cutter... Im at a small boat station so most of our BTMs and BOs are MKs and BMs... Not to say it's gonna be easy but its gonna require a lot of effort on your part to make the best decision for you... Go to boot camp learn all you can and when you get to your unit ask around to see where your other shipmates have been stationed and see what LE work they got involved in. Your main focus when you get to your unit from boot camp is gettn qualified in so you can help take some weight off your shipmates

Wow,that's interesting.Thank God for being a non rate before locking in to a rate that you might possibly not like.I am still debating on which rate i should go.BM,ME or GM.But if that's the case,i might just lean on being a BM throughout my CG Career.

I have two GM's and two ME's on my boat. Usually theres a GM and an ME on boardings with the rest being BM's or officers. Anyone "BTM" qualified can do boardings. On my boat pretty much all the SPO's have extensive LE training (regardless of rate) and will do the majority of boardings. You will do LE as any rate if your on a large cutter...
