So I have not enlisted (yet), but I am curious about what I would like to put down on my dream sheet for my first unit as a non-rate. I know it is definitely needs of the service, but there is always hopeful wishing. I just am curious to find out what life is like on a small boat station, such as duties, type of missions, typical work week (if there is one!) etc.

I would prefer to not get stationed on a cutter, but if I did then so be it. I want something that will give me lots of action and put me in the middle of some intense moments. I want to be part of a crew going out during an intense storm to rescue people! Sounds kinda cliche but that's why a lot of us love the Coast Guard, right?

If anyone who has experience could shed some light I would love to know more! Thanks.

I spent 4 years at a small boat station.. here's the general breakdown.. You work a 2 on 2 off sliding weekend rotation. As a non rate you will stand radio watch alot.. you will train to be small boat crew alot.. you will do dishes alot.. As far as action goes.. it all depends on the unit. Some see more than others. My station was busy, but it was mostly due to the number of waterborne events there were to deal with. Personally, I prefer cutter life to stations, but that's just me.

What are the differences between the two? I am just weighing the options. I want to get into aviation but I've heard being a non-rate at an airstation is no fun.

Also, what station were you located? A friend of mine just got sent to Baltimore for small boat station. So jealous!

The differences are HUGE. IMO, cutters are more fun, hands down.
