I found a sweet website for learning knots: http://www.animatedknots.com/ I'm going to guess the "Boating" section will be most relevant :-p |

Welcome, Dave! I've spent some time in Florida too, St. Augustine. I've lived in 8 states already, so I'm plenty used to moving around and being away from family. I hope we get a larger group formed! I want to recognize some faces in Philly Thanks for the link MNCoastie! |

Yay!! I hope we get the whole group on here! Does anyone know how large the typical group (company) is? If you guys have questions and such you should post them here as well, I'm sure we all know some details the others don't. I have a friend that just graduated so she's been a great resource |

Also, I'm debating whether or not I should get long johns or not. I'm trying to remember how cold it gets on the east coast in Oct/Nov. Thoughts? |

People have purchased long underwear and then never actually put it on. You will be running, jumping, pushing the deck, screaming, biking, marching... that all generates a lot of body heat. Long john's might not be worth it. Keep in mind every single thing you take must be folded and kept in a very specific location. So be prepared to care for every item you pack, even the stuff you don't touch for 8 weeks... you will have to fold it, maintain it and keep it precise. Just food for thought. |

I won't be packing long johns - from my understanding we'd be available to purchase it while we are there if it becomes necessary. And yeah, I'm much more bummed about missing half of the football season.
Anyone else have visible tattoos? From what I can gather you want to walk a fine line between volunteering and not being noticed/doing anything to drag extra attention to yourself while in basic... so I'm excited to start at a mild disadvantage! Really am excited to get going though. |

I'm also going to wait on the long johns, the less baggage the better! I'm getting excited too, how is everyone's PT going? |

No long johns it is!! We are so lucky in that we get to go in the fall. Not too hot nor too cold! My PT is uhhh, running circles around my mind! Admittedly I havn't been able to put forth as much effort in to it as I'd like.. things have been crazy!! I swore in yesterday!! Have you all swore in yet? How is your memorizing of the 11 EGO's coming? 5.5 weeks left! |

I have sworn in, and am now an official Coastie (Reserve). I'm debating whether to bring any clothing at all if it can all be purchased at bc. Does anyone know if the company store prices are at parity with Target, WalMart, etc etc? |

I swore in yesterday too!! Very exciting, made it feel a lot more real. I have 5 EGOs memorized completely, trying to get a new one down every couple days or so. The only clothing I am bringing is just the clothes I wear there and what is on the packing list. Sonata, are you bringing any makeup? I know it says we can bring a minimal amount (just for graduation I am assuming) but I am not sure whether to even bother. My last day at work is Aug 19 WOO HOO!!!!!!! |

I have been in the DEP and was sworn in in early February. I plan on only bringing what is on the packing list and nothing extra. |

My gf had a great idea: pre-write addresses on envelopes to save time. Those precious weekly divine hours need to be divided between: ironing, uni repair, studying, rack making, and letter writing; not to mention praying if one so chooses. Has anyone found a reliable phone card? I want one that'll have the shortest intro time. I haven't used a phone card since 2003 :-/ |

Paaws, I am going to bring a bit of makeup... only because I would definitely like to have a bit on for graduation and seeing my family, though that will be the only time I have it on, so most likely just powder, liner, and mascara. I also am finished with work August 19th! I am going to Virginia for a week Aug 23 - Sep 1 and Florida from Sep 1 - Sep 9 to visit family ))))) MNCoastie, that is a great idea, I will probably do that too! As for the phone card, I don't think I will even bring one. From what I understand a lot of people actually don't (unless they are buying it there I suppose). Also, I heard they assign jobs to everyone at basic, and one of those is historian. The historians job is uploading pictures and such to a facebook designated to our company. That MAY not be true, but I read about that being the case on one of these threads. That'd be awesome if it was, I'd love my family/friends being able to see our progress! |

There will be phone cards available to buy at the exchange, you won't be making any calls from the pay phone though until you get on base liberty, or depending on your CC's you MIGHT be able to once you are told what your first assignment will be, so don't stress so much about the phone cards. Also yes what your shipmate said is correct, whatever you need to buy from the exchange you will have an opportunity to do so. So if you need extra socks or underwear or razors, take advantage of that time to buy what you need. |
