Like anywhere, work is hard to come by in Alaska right now. I would move back tomorrow if I could find a guaranteed job. But my work is in Wisconsin, so until this economy turns around, I'll be stuck here for a while. It also depends what part of Alaska you are looking at. Obviously in Anchorage there is a greater possibility to find work and there are far more things to do, promoting a happier work/life combination. If you are thinking about Savoonga, I can guarantee work is limited at best and the only thing to do there is count how many baby seals get clubbed every year. Leaving a lot to be desired in the work/life happiness area.

Now if you are talking about your girlfriend following you to Alaska should you get assigned there out of boot camp. I can't more strenuously advise you against it! No matter where you go in Alaska work will be hard to find, rent will be incredibly high, cost of living can be astronomical, medical costs are outrageous, food bills can set you back an awful lot of money... I can't think of a financially dumber thing to do then to have a girlfriend trapce behind you to Alaska. A wife... a different story. A girlfriend, unless you are from there, have family, know the routine, know what to expect... dumb, dumb, dumb!!! Minimum wage is minimum wage... unless your girlfriend is an RN or a teacher or in the military herself... I do not suggest that idea.

I can't answer your question about work life, but I will tell you my son is enjoying Alaska. The pay isn't higher but he gets something called COLA - it's a 'little' extra per month to help offset the added cost of living OCONUS (off the continental U.S.).( Milk is more expensive, as are shipping costs, etc.) Also, as your girlfriend, she wouldn't be able to go with you and live with you, unless you two were to rent a place on the economy (no BAH). There are a lot of variables that depend on where you get stationed. If you were married, that's a different story.
And the bottom line?....... the needs of the service decide on where you will be stationed out of boot camp. You can fill out your dream sheet in boot camp, which basically tells them where you would like to go, but there is no guarantee you will get what you want.

    Hope this helped!

I have never been to Petersburg... I have been to Juneau & Ketchikan, Petersburg is just about in between the 2. II googled it and came up with the unit PDF, I can't copy & paste it since it is a pdf. But just look up USCGC Elderberry and you'll find it, too. Alaska is a great place, Petersburg is going to be somewhat isolated to say the least. Hopefully you don't have a shopaholic child, that will be tough.

Here is a link to a picture of the ship when she visited Juneau. http://www.flickr.com/photos/alaska...581358824/ It's not a huge boat, there will be a lot to be learned. Best of luck!!!! Are you excited about the assignment??

Old Guard2, Yes I am very excited for my Coastie! He's young and single so no better time for an Alaska adventure, even if it is 3000 miles from home! He loves outdoor activities and isn't much of a shopper so it should be a good fit. I've read everything I can get my hands on but it's always better to get first hand knowledge!

Oh I'm glad you are happy about the assignment. Just think about the vacation you need to plan to such an amazing location. It isn't so bad honestly. I moved to Alaska from NJ to marry my Coastie. It was a fantastic adventure and I wouldn't trade that time that I had for all the tea in China!

+ Macie. My mom is excited to come see me in January. She isn't excited for the cold, but she is ready to see snow for the first time in almost 20 years! Dad is going to come up and go fishing this summer. It's all very exciting for them. They loved San Francisco when I was there, a place they never would have gone before. It's been one of my dad's favorite vacations so far I think

Seriously, I am from Florida. I HATED the thought of coming up here. This is my first winter. And I don't actually want to leave. Kodiak already has a little piece of my heart. I may definitely be ready to go in a couple years, but for right now, I live in the most beautiful place on earth.

Judy, I sent you an email.

Cable'sMom, what a small world! Although since Base Kodiak is so big, its no shock how many of us are here, have family members here, or have been here!
