Hi, Lavabear32! I live (reasonably) close to that area...what all would you like to know? Look up Humboldt County ; Eureka CA. ; Arcata, CA ; McKinleyville CA. Those are all pretty close together, and a lot of overlap with with the stations there. It's a college town area. Humboldt State University and College of the Redwoods (a 2 yr junior college) are right there. HSU has a very well respected forestry major, and COR has a police academy. Cool, foggy....80 degrees is a heat wave. Lots of rain in the winter...near really spectacular state and nat'l parks. Adequate shopping: WinCo, Costco, Kmart, Target, etc....
Unfortunately, the area is also notoriously part of California's Emerald Triangle--the most prosperous and productive marijuana growing region in the US. This has a pretty big effect on everything from the economy to CG recruiting . My son went through Eureka's recruiting office, and they are thrilled to get someone with no record, good grades and no tats, who can pass a pee test on the first try. :-/
A lot of the area is in the tsunami zone ; hills prone to slides in the rainy season. What else?

Hey, it's a rescue and LE service, right? Humboldt's got EVERYTHING by that standard! Shoot, the county I live in (right next door) is so remote we call in CG helicopters to do inland rescues! No one else can get to cars that go off these mountain roads, and heaven knows the sheriffs here can't afford helos. He'll have a great time.
How about microbreweries? Did I mention those?

I'm really excited to be heading to AIRSTA HUMBOLDT Bay. It will be nice to get to see another part of the country. As for mirco brews, no drinking for me until I hear AST3 spoken to me. Just a little more motivation .

It's a beautiful place in spite of the oddities, and Humboldt will keep you busy. I will think of you next time we see the orange helo!

My dad was a pilot and was stationed in Humboldt when I was 5 and ended up retiring there. So I have lived there almost my whole life!! We lived in Eureka. There is a TON if nature to explore there, like in the Redwood forests. The beach there is a lot different than a beach in SoCal. Mostly because the weather there is usually rainy and foggy. It's a fun place to be and Im glad that I got to grow up there. If you have any questions about it feel free to message me!
