My coastie is in boot camp right now and graduates August 12th. He's going to be stationed in Mobile, Al. I'll be moving in with him in a year or so, but I was just wondering how it would work out? Would we live in on-base housing? Off-base? Is there even on-base housing for coast guard there? I guess I could wait till he graduates to ask all the questions, but I'm so impatient and would really like to know. |

First and foremost question... will you be married or are you going to be living together as boyfriend/girlfriend. That will dramatically effect the answer to this question. Welcome aboard. Feel free to ask any questions before he graduates, we'll do our best to help how we can. |

Well by the time I move in with him, we'd be married. But not for another 2 years from now. But yes, we will be married when I move in with him. |

My son has friends stationed in Mobile and they all live off of base. So, that may mean that there are no living quarters on base. Is your recruit going on a cutter that is stationed there or going to Sector? Just get ready for extreme warm weather and humidity if you are not already from the south. Welcome. |

My recruit is going on CGC Cobia. I don't know much about it or anything. At first I thought he'd be living on it, but it's way too small, so I guess not. And I'm definitely used to the heat and humidity since I'm from Panama City, Florida. That's no big deal Thanks for the info! |

If you google CGC Cobia the first thing that pops up is the unit information sheet. It is a PDF file so I can't attach a link to it. But there is no housing, you'll be renting on the economy. Rates may have changed some but that sheet shows average rent in the area is $750 a month, BAH is $809. That is from April 2010. Panama City to Mobile isn't too bad! |

I've been checking out housing in the area for a while. Even though Daphne/Spanish Fort/ Fairhope are all more expensive, it's just the better place to live. I think that one of your recruits is single, BAH is 730 and if you want to live in Daphne or anywhere nice you either have to live really small or just pay out of pocket. There also is no galley in Mobile so BAS is authorized(food pay) BAS for 2011 is $325.04 a month. |
