Hey Guys, I've got a quick question about Guaranteed A School. I've recently completed MEPS so I'm just waiting to meet with my recruiter to get a boot camp date and to swear in. Originally I had my heart set on either ME or AST ratings. However, the wait list for those two are extremely long. A bud that's currently in the CG gave me the advice that I should instead sign up for A school to become an OS rate since they are very vital to operations and that I could probably get guaranteed A school for that and come out graduating that school as an E4 instead of waiting 2 years as a non rate for the ME or AST rating. So my question is, is that correct? After BC I'd go to A school for an OS and graduate A school as an E4? He also said that in the CG you can switch jobs after 2 years as being a certain rate. Is that true as well? I'm just looking to make the best decision that ultimately gets me a rated position in the meantime, but still allows me to do the job I really want somewhere in the not to distant future. Any suggestions or helpful comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Only guaranteed school is FS currently.

What I've said over and over, I'll say again, not that I'm an expert. Far from it. I'm not even in the Coast Guard. I'm JUST a mom that wants the best for my son's ... and everone else's (daughter's too)

Choose the rate that YOU WANT to do for a career. Don't settle for anything but what you want. If it's what you want, it will be worth the wait. What if you went OS and ended up hating it? What if you went to your first duty station and tried out a bunch of rates (shadowing), saw them in action and then chose something else? The result is that you would go to a-school well-informed and knowing that you did your homework hand's on, not just by reading a write-up about a rate, or chose the school with the shortest list. Choose without reguard to the a-school list. You will be happier in the long run with your choice.

And as far as switching after two years??? I'm not too sure about that. Why would the CG spend all that money to train you in a job, then do it again because you wanted to?

Yes, you will graduate a-school as an E4, or Petty Officer 3rd.

FYI, my son started at the bottom of the ME list in January. He is now just about in the middle.

I like Cable's Mom have no actual experience as a Coastie but my Son is currently at his first Duty Station. He wants MST. He knows based on the quals and waiting list he will have to extend his contract but thats no problem as far as he is concerned. He is doing a very dangerous job and finds it tests him and prepares him for the rest of his career in the CG. The only thing that is tough is knowing its a long way to E4.

thanks for the responses guys. cable's mom - you're right, it would be a bad choice to pick something i probably wouldn't enjoy doing. ME or AST are two things i know i'd love doing and it really would be worth the wait.
