I think it's different for me. I heard somewhere that people in NY leave from Fort Hamilton and take a bus to the airport in Philadelphia, which sucks if that's true. I guess I'll find out from my recruiter.

Yup, that's the MEPS here in Brooklyn. I haven't DEP'd in as yet though. I'm going to on December 1st.

Hey Sean! Besides the physical stuff, I've been memorizing the required knowledge in the Helmsman. So far I have the Guardian Ethos, phonetic alphabet and nautical terms down. I just have to work on those 11 General Orders.

Nice another shipper! Nice to meet ya Sean. Where in PA do ya live? I lived there for 11 years before moving to jersey.

I run everyday. Really working on my 1.5 mile. I do the three position crunches, sit up's, pull up's, and flutter kicks. Once the swim club opens up I'm going to start swimming again. I eat junk nonstop so i've been trying to watch what I eat.

Lol I haven't looked much at the required knowledge which I should probably start especially the 11 general rules

Hey! im from northwestern PA but I actually attend Slippery Rock University if your familiar with the area, like 45 mins from Pittsburgh. How old is everyone? And how come your enlisting in the Coast Guard? JW

I need to work on my running (i hate running) lol any advice? But I've been working out 4-5 days a week its just hard to find the time with school and work. Once i graduate in Dec I'm planning on really buckling down on a workout routine. I havn't started to memorize any of the general knowledge but thats a great idea. Thanks for the advice!
So what kind of concerns if any does everyone have about basic and/or the CG in general? (conversation starter)

I'm 20. Well I'm no trainer but run on a track. I do the treadmill at the gym everynight on an incline but to get a real time of where you're at that's the best way. On the t/m I can run a 10.20 1.5 mile on but at the track I'm closer to 11.40.

Btw Idk the area that well but I have family up that way so I've been up around there a few times.

No real concerns. If I was in better shape I would be ready to go but I'll take the time we have to better prepare myself. As far as the required knowledge, twice a day I write down the 11 general rules on a piece of paper two times then throw it away. I just started doing this so hopefully it starts sinking in soon.

Friday I'm going to cape may again so I'm going to check out some of the stuff they are doing down there. I'll let y'all know if I see anything we might benefit from... I can't wait yo see that beautiful 47'er tho

I'm 19. Geez, you guys are really working out way more than I am, I'm slacking. It's gonna be much harder to run when it gets colder but once I'm done with school in December I'm gonna start getting serious about this. I don't think I have any concerns about basic. I just hope that I like the CG once I'm in there because I'd really like to make it a career.

Any ideas on where you guys would like to be stationed? What district?

Talk to your recruiter about working out at sector. You'll train with coasties and they'll help you. I'm going to start doing this as well.

Going to the base again today was great. I got to talk to 2 crewmen on a cutter and they helped me figure out a little more of what to expect. Also talking to a GM also made me think more about what rate I want... leaning toward a ME

As far as districts I hope to get a small boat station in D9, D1, D17.

Just something I found out too... really start getting those general rules down. My recruiter was saying that around january he'll start calling me and quizzing me on them.

That makes four of us now out of a company of about 100+. How's the weather out there? Looking to get stationed close by there when it comes time to make your dream sheet?

Weather is nice here if you don't mind the rain. I love the rain personally. I'm hoping to get stationed in the Bay Area but I will take anything.

thats awesome! did they tell you anything else to expect from basic? and I havnt really put too much thought into districts yet but i should give that a glance or two. Im leaning toward ME too. thats the reason I want to be in the CG im a criminology/ criminal justice major. Its a bummer that its a two year wait list.

Last I checked it was over 2 years. I jumped out of school to join the CG but while I was in I was majoring in criminal justice too.

16 weeks, 6 days to basic haha

It's going pretty well. I've mostly been working on my pushups and doing lots of squats and flutter kicks. I also managed to memorize the general orders and the rates/ranks. I think I should be ready once March rolls around. How are things going for you?

Don't quit have the general rules down 100% but I've been working on those along with the rank/rates too. Same here... running, pullups, setups, and flutter kicks.

I have a feeling that we're gonna be a small company. Maybe it's too soon to tell.
Graduation should be on May 11th.

name is Anthony im 18 and from the Detroit area in Michigan. im shipping out march 6th for basic so we wont be in the same company and ill probably never see you guys (we cant communicate with people from other companies) but just wanted to say good luck! im planning on being an AET and id like to serve 20 years and retire from the CG. someone asked for a tip on running earlier, keep your elbows tucked in and push your hips forward. avoid sway in the arms and most importantly BREATH! get a regular breathing pattern going and you'll see a huge change in your running distance. also try to take big strides and decrease the amount of time your feet are on the ground. i run everyday and have completed a 26 mile marathon and these tips work for me so hopefully they work for you! maybe ill see you guys in the fleet one day, good luck!

Found out some info out our CC's

Long story short I sold a set of wheels to a guy that happens to be a CC. After talking a bit he did a little research for me and found out who our CC's are going to be based on our ship date and who's filled in for the billet. We have 3 company commanders and 2 of them are on the tough side. The other is a little more on the softer side. He said his company has dropped a few people already just b/c people are showing up totally out of shape. Doesn't seem to be a problem with us so far though.

Word of advice was to be loud! Even if you don't know the right answer still be loud and answer with confidence. Also to make showers simple buddy up... rotate in and out, while one is soaping up the other is washing off. This makes the 2.5minute shower easier. Also when getting changed, don't waist time trying to get a bench seat or anything. Spread out find a spot away from people so you have room to move and don't have others in your face bumping into each other. Don't write your locker combo on the back of the lock cc's look for it, open your locker and throw all your things out for you to pick up and refold.

Any other q's I have his number and he welcomes calls and questions
