I know I brought this question up, but I'll try it again.
Does anyone have any information about the duties of boat patrol? AND how long they may be away from home port?
I'll be moving to Oregon when my BF leaves (3 1/2 weeks from now) and I'm just worried about getting settled in and then having him leave for a month or so? I know he'll be able to communicate with me, but it will be hard especially since I'm far from home and everything is new.
Please, if anyone has any information on this, it will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! THANKS!!!

im not in the CG, i leave for basic Dec. 4th, however i know that if he is on a cutter, like a 270, they do 2 months out at sea and 2 months at port, thats what ive been told by a buddy who is stationed on CGC BEAR.
patrol boats i dont think go out for very long, like 110 footers only go out for a couple days or so (this is just what ive been told) maybe 2 weeks max.
hope that helps alittle bit. either way i think you'll be able to see him a good amount, ecspecially if ur living toghehther |

He's going to be on the USCGC Orcas. It's a 110-foot cutter. I found a site that provides information about the different types of cutters & boats. It says that a 110-foot cutter has an endurance of 10-14 days. Althought he's not on a larger cutter, there's still a possibility that he may be away from HOMEport for a while. =/ I guess we're just going to have to wait and see.<!-- Edit --> Moderator Edit : 10/26/2007 12:32:42 PM GMT |

The Orcas is a nice little cutter. When we lived in Coos Bay I drove by it all the time. It did come and go alot though so they must do little mini patrols off the Or/WA/CA coast line. Coos Bay/North Bend are nice. The weather will be a little bit of a shocker on your Hawaii tan....people in Oregon don't tan, they rust!! (That used to be the joke when I lived there.) |

HEy! I'm guessing I should prepare myself already for my BF to be away a lot.
But thanks for the heads-up! I'll be finding out all about Coos Bay and the weather in 3 weeks.

i wouldnt say he will be away ALOT. he will be under way some weeks, maybe a month or two, and home for a while.
you are right the 110s go out for like 2 weeks max, however they may and will make port at other ports sometimes to refuel and stock up. however i wouldnt be worried, its not iraq, he wont be away for a year at a time. i would say the most he would be away would be 1 month, very rarley would he be away anymore.
good luck |

THANKS! I guess a month isn't too long. It'll just take some getting used to.
Doesn't really help when these past 7 weeks have seemed like FOREVER!!!!
I'm just getting nervous about leaving home.

You're very lucky if you were guaranteed the 5th district. My boyfriend really wanted to be stationed at home in Hawaii but we got Oregon. It wasn't even on his top picks. Anyway, if you have any love ones that you will be leaving behind, introduce them to this site. Everyone's sooooo very nice and helpful. If you've been keeping up with all the post in the past 3-4 weeks, you'll be able to get a good idea of what to expect. I know I posted A LOT of information about what my boyfriend is going through right now in boot camp. Well, if you have any questions, you can always ask me.
BEST OF LUCK as well to you and CONGRATS on joining the USCG!

do you think that you are more likely to get the district you wanted if you signed for 6 years? because my boyfriend did and he wants distrcit 5 as well because we live in MD. that would be amazing if he was actually staying in this district. how exactly do you know that you were guaranteed this area? |

TO my understanding, you have to have it signed in a contract that you will be guaranteed anything in the Coast Guard. If there's no contract, they can do whatever.

my daughter will be on a 270'. two months in and two months out seems to be what she is being told. she also signed for 8 yrs, serve 6. it was in her contract for a guaranteed district (n.c.), however, in bootcamp she changed her mind about where she wanted to go. she still filled out a dream sheet jut like the rest of the recruits. my understanding that getting your pick depends on what is needed, however, the cc's seem to have some pull with that. recruits who are doing well seem to have a better chance at a pick, those who are struggling have less chance. at least that is what my graduated recruit says. |

Have you checked out the ORCAS website yet? Read up on it and you'll know more about the ship than your fiance, albeit temporarily. Housing information from Group North Bend's website. The attached picture is of SENECA in Haiti. The 110' rafted alongside stayed out for almost an entire month with us on AMIO patrol. They would raft alongside for a few hours which allowed them to do their laundry on our ship (110's don't have laundry available). We also topped off their water and fuel tanks. It was the longest patrol I've seen a 110' do without making port. Certainly not typical of 110s. Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor or a recruiter. Verify any and all information I've stated before making a fool of yourself because I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. |

THANKS XSHIPRIDER!
And YES...I have checked out both websites. You can bet I've been doing my research on EVERYTHING. I think I spend more time researching stuff for the Coast Guard than I spend on my college studies at the moment. LOL!
So you say 1 month was the longest you've ever seen a patrol boat out at sea? That's good to hear. I think a month wouldn't be too bad when getting used to everything and the new location.
thanks again!

Well, don't belay your studies too much. Your Coastie will need a college grad' to support him on the beach in paradise after he retires in 2027. No, the longest I did was 83 days on patrol on a 270' Medium Endurance Cutter in company with a 378' High Endurance Cutter (GALLATIN). The 110' alongside in the photo stayed with us for an entire month on a different patrol. That's a very long time for a 110'. Note - most 110' only stay out for a week or so before pulling in to top off fuel/water/stores. Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor or a recruiter, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Though I strive to ensure accuracy, my information can be dated at times. Please verify all info with a recruiter or your command.<!-- Edit --> Last Edited : 10/27/2007 3:42:56 AM GMT |

Ohhh YES! You sure do need a college degree to survive in Hawaii! The prices for EVERYTHING are crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok..I know this all depends on the duty, but how long would you say that he may be away from HOMEPORT at a time??? I know they can last out at sea for 1 week but that doesn't mean that they'll be coming back to homeport. ANy knowledge on this?
