Best route to ME? Res. or AD?

So its my understanding that the reserves have the  majority of ME school billets. I am currently in the process of enlisting for active duty ( if I can ever get the chance to take the asvab!), with the sole intention of becoming ME. The Coast Guards maritime law enforcement role is what sold me on enlistment and I would hope to be assigned to an MSRT unit.

My question is could one enlist in the reserves, get their slot, and then lateral transfer to active duty with their rate? Or could this take just as long as the active duty route?

Also I am assuming that MSRT, TACLET and other DOG units (except the strike teams) are composed mostly of MEs. Is this correct?

I'm not trying to get unfair advantage on anyone, but I turn 26 this month and I can feel the clock ticking!

    Thank You.

If you're a Reservist you won't be eligible to lateral to AD for a MINIMUM of 2 years (the average wait time for ME school if you are on AD). In order to lateral to AD you have to put in a formal request through your chain of command, and it has to be approved by the Reserve and AD sides of the house. Basically, if the Reserves want to keep you, and the AD has no room you stay a Reservist.

DOG units are composed of a few different rates: BMs, MKs, GMs, MEs, and SKs are usually assigned.

OK, so there isn't much of an advantage in that approach. Thank you for clarifying that for me.

Could you speak to the make up of an MSST, MSRT or TACLET unit in terms of rates and schools?

    Thank You again.

I have a friend whose last unit was an MSST. I'll talk to him next week about his unit make up, etc and post what isn't OPSEC sensitive.
