Oki know that we have just recently brought this up, but im getting a little confused by what everyone is saying.  Are the recruits required to live on barracks after graduation?  Or are they allowed to live in an apartment and get the housing allowance?  I know that they have to spend some time out at seas, but when they are not on the water are they allowed to get an apartment off the base?  Im asking because my boyfriend and I do not plan on getting married as soon as he gets off base and if he is going to be stationed close by (crosses fingers) i would love to be able to stay with him or possibly move with him wherever he is stationed.

If housing is assigned to him as a single person he will not be entitled to BAH.

That said, if he wants to go it on his own dime there is nothing stopping him.

Disclaimer #2: There was a time when barracks had to be 9X% full before commands would allow personnel who desired to move out of said barracks to request same.  If the request was granted then said sailor would get BAH at the single rate.  Usually this was done on a seniority basis.  The reason they'd let people opt out or move out was they needed the 5% give or take for transient or temporarily assigned personnel.

Things may have changed so don't quote me on the latter.

thank you so much for your response.  Im sure im becoming quite annoying with all of these questions about the barracks.  lol.  But it's just the main thing on my mind lately.

It's my privilege to be able to pass on info.  I always hope someone more current than me will pitch in, which many do as we grow this site.  I like the fact that as people learn they are quick to share the knowledge.
