Hello All - I have been in the process of joining since around August 2011. I went to MEPS in early november. Passed the physical and scored a 75 on my ASVAB. After this my recruiter told me it could be some time before he can give me a ship date for boot camp which I knew going in. I went back to MEPS on December 21st to retake the ASVAB and scored an 81 this time around.

I followed up with my recruiter who informed me that he still did not have enough positions to put me in right now and said he would pull my scores and contact me next week to talk about jobs. The week he said he would contact me has passed and I still haven't heard anything. I am planning on contacting him today.

So I have a couple questions to ask:

    1. I live between two recruiting offices, and a friend of mine who has been in the USCG for four years now told me that after talking to some guys about my situation I should possibly contact the other office. They may have open spots that the current office has already filled. Is this a good idea or should I stick with my current recruiter and continue to show my determination to get to bootcamp?

    2. Does the 6 point jump on my ASVAB mean anything or am I basically in the same spot as I was before with the 75?

    Thank You,
    Ryan

    Is this a good idea

No. Shopping around the different ROs undermines the work your recruiter has already done. Plus, you didn't fully qualify until November. It's been 2 months, most people wait anywhere from 6 months to a year or a ship date sometimes longer.

Follow up with your recruiter, but be POLITE and PROFESSIONAL with them. It's likely your recruiter is working a few dozen cases, plus collateral duties.
Fighting spirit.- You know what this is. Without it, you are only a human biped who wears pants. With it, you are a live, red-blooded go-getter-one who will succeed. Have you the grit to stay with a hard job? Never say "I can't." Forget there is such a phrase. Don't be a quitter. "A man may be down but never out" - until he admits it." -From the U.S. Navy Bluejackets' Manual circa 1940

Thank You, I figured it wasn't the best advice i have been given since i know recruiters have a lot going on. I have heard from him since this post and was told to keep in touch with him from here on out by email once a month and will see when something opens up.

    Hopefully its soon!

    Thanks again for your advice.

It's a long process usually and it's definitely worth the wait. Trust me i waited over a year but finally made it.
