          Greetings,

My son is getting ready to join the CG and I would like to know what ratings are open for advancement and which ones are closed or harder to advance in?

from what i have heard. avation is the hardest to advance with. BM and some other deck and ordanance ratings are easier to advance in.

    >>This message<< will list the critical billets. This means these ratings are currently the fastest advancing rates because gaps need to be filled... for now.

Traditionally, aviation has been hard to fill because they had a better re-enlistment ratio than most other ratings. That always said to me that aviators were just plain happy folk in their jobs and stuck with it regardless of advancement opportunity.

He's better off picking something he'll like. Murphy's Law says if he picks the fast mover today, by the time he gets out of A school and pins on E-4 it'll slow to a crawl. Better to be happy just in case that happens.

Thanks so much to both of you for the info. My son saw his recruiter today and his recruiter is encouraging him to be either a cook or a BM and he is thinking about BM cause that's what his Daddy did in the USN. The recruiter claims there are better enlistment bonuses with the above mentioned rates and that he would be advanced to E-3 out of basic because of his college credits. Nothing in writing but than again what recruiter ever does put it in writing? ;-)

Well, that depends mostly on the person and opportunities to get >> these qual's << signed off. Every qual' that starts with the #4 is one he needs signed off before he can advance to E-4/BM3. And so it goes - 5s are for E-5/BM2, 6s are for E-6/BM1, etc.

Striking is the toughest because it requires the E-2/E-3 to continue doing his/her "day job" while trying to get qual's signed off. Some can be signed off during the course of a day's activity, some cannot. Not because no one wants to but rather other people are doing their "day jobs" too.

A school allows the individual to get all requirements for E-4 signed off while concentrating solely on those factors. The A school attendees whole job is to focus on academics and practicals.
