If you decide to join the Reserves plan on being a Reservist. Making the switch to active duty is considered on a case-by-case basis. If you're interested in active duty then apply for active duty, after you're a rated Petty Officer you may have a shot at being attached to a DOG unit. |

I was just at the recruiter today and this is what they told all the new people there who were wondering which they should choose. They pretty much said you won't be able to go reserve to active duty. A lot of the applicants there were discouraged because the recruiting office here (St. Pete FL) has already filled their 60 spots for 2012 and the applicants didn't want to wait at least another year. So the recruiter said, would you rather wait another year and go active duty and do what you want to do? Or spend the next 6 years reserve and wishing you'd waited for ad... The only way the recruiter said people go from Reserve to AD is if they apply to OCS because thats a totally separate thing. |

I am in that situation now. My reserve contract is up in 6 months and I would like to reenlist as an active duty member. I am currently and SK2 and was told that SKs are not as packed with people as they once were. |

The SK rating is manned at 100% right now on the active duty side. |

Also I have found that reservist recieve zero respect from the active duty side. So go active to begin with. I've only been in for 1.5 yrs and it's horrible.... |

Sinj, I disagree with your statement. The reserves are highly respected by their active duty counterparts. I know this from working with reservists for the last 27 years AND being a reservist myself at one point. If you have positive information to pass, great! Do not come onto these boards with broad accusations that the Active duty people do not respect. Amazing that you can speak for all reserves and active duty people!

I also disagree Sinj. When I was at the Station we worked closely with the Reserves and the Aux. The Reserves helped us conduct extra training, boardings, and stood watches for us. We loved them. |

sinj, Can you please elaborate on your personal experiences? I know that I have worked closely with reservists, and there was a good working relationship between them and the active side. I would like to hear more about your experiences, negative or not. I only ask that you stick to providing examples and offering your personal opinion, rather than throwing out blanket statements such as "reservist recieve zero respect from the active duty side". That statement is broad and quite frankly, inaccurate. |
