My MKC was talking to me about PATFORSWA (I'm a non-rate wanting to go ME.) He said that after your tour there you're number one on A school list. Is that true? Also how long would that be? Any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, after a tour there you do get the highest preference for A school. However, getting assigned there is almost as difficult as the waiting time for A school. They will put out an announcement looking for volunteers and then A LOT of non-rates will ask for the spots. You might get one, you might not. Your best bet is to just approach it as though you will be waiting for A school. If you get there early, great. If not, then you will go when you get orders just like the great majority of non-rates.

Make sure you have your weapons quals and can pass the BTM requirements. Those are biggies.

How long is a tour for and where/what exactly is it? I am curious as well because I have never heard of this before?

It is a one year tour in Bahrain.

but this is the last time im going to say this. Dont worry about things like this until you make it through basic and get to your unit and then worry about things. Worrying about it before you ever make it to basic is just a waste of your time!!!

We had a slot to go straight to PATSFORSWA right out of boot camp, we were also solicited within about 2 weeks for more PATSFORSWA stuff once I reported to my first unit. It is OK to be gathering information before it happens, its called being prepared.

They are not allowing it out of boot camp anymore from the last i was told.

BIGC i wasnt talking to you as you are already in. i was talking to someone that has asked about all different type of units that are not the norm for the coast guard( dog, MSST, patforswa) Dont get me wrong on this as it is a very essential mission that has to be done but you should not be looking at going to these units until you get your career started not before you are every through boot camp first.

Remember if you're trying to hop to the top of the A school list, before you deploy you have the wait to predeployment training, predeployment training, then the deployment. I know someone who went and it took him longer to get to A school than if he just waited.

As E said, you just don't go to Bahrain. Theres 4 months of pre-deployment training and other stuff. My former OSC just left for Bahrain and its really an 18-month obligation all said and done.

    Hello all,
looking through i see a few people mention that it helps if you have your gun quals. can you be a little more specific on which quals you actually need and what will look best to have. For instance is just having basic in pistol, rifle, and shot gun good enough?
Also, I'm currently at my second unit and have been in for almost 2 years, both units have been 110s out in D1. Will this help me in anyway to get selected to go? being that there are some 110s out there

It might. It would help to get practical on those weapons as well. Also it would help to be btm. They are going to take thebest applicants, and most likely those that are tour complete, not minimally qualified and those that arent tour complete.

Tour complete = finishing your orders at that particular unit. In other words, you would apply for it when you are getting ready for transfer season. Look at the message board. The solicitations will appear on there, and they will ask for people that are tour complete in certain years. I'm at predeployment training as we speak for PATFORSWA.

That is the BM one but they are all pretty much the same, including the nonrate one. You also need to be "suitable for overseas assignment" which means no alcohol incidents in the past 2 years. No excessive Financial Strain.. ect.

My command had me do basic and practical for pistol and shotgun. The reason why i wasn't chosen was lack of LE experience, so being a BTM is a huge help.

No you can go, you just can't bring them. You would live as a Geobachelor. Cooch is in predeployment training he will be able to elaborate more.

I have a wife and three kids. While the Navy brings their dependent there, we are on a restricted tour. You will receive the BAH for where your family resides while you are deployed. There are also tax breaks and extra pay and allowances. If you have dependents, make sure this is a family decision and everyone is on board. I made my decision together with my family, and I couldn't imagine how tough it would be if I had made this decision on my own. For most billets, its a one year tour, not including two months of predeployment training and some other online training you need to complete. So all in all, it is a one year deployment, but a 15 month commitment. I'm in predeployment training right now, and am scheduled to report overseas around the end of April. You get two weeks of R&R time in the middle sometime, to come home and visit the family. There is wifi in the housing over there, so you will be able to Skype or FaceTime with them on a regular basis.

It's a huge decision, so make sure you think about everything that goes into it. Overall, I think it will be a rewarding tour, and something that will bring good memories when I'm long since retired.
You can meet the standard, or you can set the standard. It's your choice.

My ex-husband did a year in Iraq. He was in Umm Qasr. For his 2 week R&R his wife and son flew from Juneau, Alaska to Spain. They spent 2 weeks there having a great time. He also received the Bronze Star while he was there. He said it was an absolute pit but he is very proud of his work there and glad he did it.
