Since March 2009, I’ve been a soldier in the United States Army Reserve. I’m currently an 88K Watercraft Operator and am licensed as a seaman aboard United States Army 174-foot Landing Craft and have so far sailed numerous times in near coastal and inland waters of the west coast, Alaska and Canada. As a Watercraft Operator, I’m trained in navigation, marlinspike seamanship, damage control, water survival, fire fighting and other skills useful aboard various watercraft. I’ll likely be deploying to Kuwait Naval Base for 9 to 12 months next year. My reenlistment will be up in March 2015.
My desire is to enlist into the active duty United States Coast Guard as a Boatswain’s Mate or another similar rating at that time. I know a lot could change by then, but I would like to know hypothetically if an E-4 or E-5 Army Watercraft Operator would transfer over to the Coast Guard. I’m aware I would be required to attend the Coast Guard’s Basic Training, but with my experience and skills aboard watercraft, will I be required to attend A School and will I be able to retain my rank?
Thank you for your time and support.
