    Hello,

Im thinking about joining the AUX but have a couple questions. Do aux members go to bootcamp or do any sort of training before getting in? And I was also wondering abou the process of geting in. It is just like joining he regular CG? Also I wanted to know about the time commitment. I go to school at night and work a couple days a week during the day. Would 3 or so days a week be acceptable?

i don't have a ton of knowledge about this but i can offer some advice considering i just started the process a few days ago.

as far as how to join, go to their website. what i did was submit an online form similar to how the gocoastguard.com website has it. just stuff saying like whats your name and contact information. about an hour later i get a call from the local flotilla near where i live and spoke to the hr person who was extremely helpful with questions and answers. after that conversation he stated he would mail a packet out to me with papers as far as how to start the rest of the process.

that whole start to current step took 2 days. they are definitely efficient =)

Thanks for the quick response! I spoke a local flotilla and am setting up an interview for this weekend! Anyone have any advise on anything? Has anyone ever heard of someone going from the AUX to asctive or reserve at that unit?

Where are you. I'll try to get you connected with someone local to you.

As an Aux, you can qualify for almost any mission that doesn't involve deputized law enforcement or shooting combat. You're also pretty much forbidden from handing Coast Guard funds but you can handle Auxiliary $$.

If you really want to get 'in' the Aux. will be a good place for you to get a taste. If you find you can qualify for an Aux. certification for Crew or Search and Rescue you can then focus on attaching yourself to a local active duty unit and ask the officer in charge or commanding officer if he will let you train for an active duty qualification. This does NOT make you a member of the active duty but you can qualify to serve alongside the active duty (with the above caveats) and get an even better taste of the Coast Guard.

eMail me offline and I'll do what I can to hook you up with the people and knowledge you may need.

Please share email addresses through PM. Putting your email on an open forum could leave you open to SPAM attacks. If you want to post your email, that is fine. Just please don't blame the site if someone you don't want having your email, gets it. That's all. Otherwise... best of luck!
