Do nonrates stay at their first unit until they go to "A" school? What if  a year has gone by and the wait for "A" school is still at least another 18 months or so? Also  what if the boat goes into dry dock? All these things are happening to my daughter now. She just now is putting her name on "A"school and is not sure what to do, she is not real happy at this unit.

You stay at the unit until you go to 'A' school. In the case of a really long wait, there are occasions where you would transfer off a cutter after three years or out of a land unit after four. They generally don't transfer because of a dry dock period.
You can meet the standard, or you can set the standard. It's your choice.

    Yes.

She stays at the unit for another 18 months while she waits for "A" School orders. The typical afloat tour is 3 years.

Also what if the boat goes into dry dock?

The Command will decide what the crew is going to do. I have a friend whose boat is going into drydock soon. He'll be coming to my office TAD (Temp Additional Duty) I don't know if your daughter will have the same opportunity.

she is not real happy at this unit.

It happens. I wasn't too fond of my first unit until I left for "A" school. I left with more good memories than bad ones. All she can do at this point is make the best of it.

My husband's cutter is soon going into a 10 month dry dock. They are not sending them elsewhere just because of this.

Lol I am doing a full tour at my first unit. I definitely didn't plan on it but staying at my unit was more appealing than transferring to somewhere that I didn't want to go for 3-4 years.
Take what you like and leave the rest behind.

Kid at my unit will complete his 3-year tour here before he gets to A-school. It happens. The price you pay for a long wait school. Even if she waits 2 years to go to school, it will still be one of the shortest assignments in her career...
