    Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum but I have looked around a good bit. I just got a basic application for the recruiter emailed to me and I figured I would ask you guys some questions.

First I will give you a little background on myself. I am 22 yrs. old and I am graduating from Virginia Tech in May with a BS in Biology.  I came out of high school with a 3.9 GPA and an ACT score of 27 (91st percentile in the state of Virginia). That being said, my grades have dropped in college. I had a fairly traumatic sophomore year because my roommate and his girlfriend were murdered one night when they went out on a date. A year later, one of my other housemates was hiking and slipped and fell of a cliff and passed away. The result of this was my grades plummeting and will graduate with an overall GPA of about 2.8. I say these things not for pity, but for an explanation of my poor GPA. I recently took the GRE and a combine score of 306, which is good enough to get me into a mid level graduate school. I was wondering if an OCS panel consider me based on high school performance and the GRE, or would they just throw out my application based on my low college GPA?

I will have 8K of student loans when I graduate, which is not bad considering that have paid for the majority of my college education. Once I graduate, I will move back in with my parents and work until I can join the CG. But I also need to buy a car this summer since I do not have one at the moment. So that will put me another couple thousand in debt. Is that too much of a red flag for the CG?

The only other possible red flag I have is medical. I have gone to the hospital for seven broken bones, one of them being my hip, but all of these healed perfectly and none of them required surgery. I was also involved in a pretty bad snowboarding accident which resulted in me getting airlifted from the ski slope. I tore a few renal arteries which resulting in about 1/3 of one of my kidneys atrophying but it still is a fully functioning kidney. This did not require surgery either. Will that be a turnoff to the CG?  Also, do I need to provide official medical records to the recruiter when I meet him for the interview or is that something that is sorted out at MEPs?

Sorry for the long email but any advice would be appreciated. I have had a very hard time getting in touch with a recruiter so I really do appreciate any input. Do you think I would be competitive for OCS? I am really excite to join the CG!

Sorry to hear about your roommate and his girlfriend. I can't imagine how devastating that would be.

Your HS GPA isn't going to make a difference to the panel. A 2.5 college GPA is the minimum to apply. Your (understandable) 2.8 is qualifying. Whether or not it'll be a deciding factor in selection, we can't tell you because we don't know. 10-15K in debt as long as it's current won't DQ you financially. I wouldn't recommend buying a Ferrari, but a decent car shouldn't hurt you.

Fully healed broken bones aren't typically an issue. As far as your kidney's go, we can't say. Your medical records would have to be reviewed by MEPS.

Based on the very little information you've posted I would say you have an uphill battle for OCS. I don't know what your other accolades are though, and I have no idea what the next panel will be looking for so don't take that to heart. You might want to consider enlistment as an option which can give you a slight edge when it comes to OCS.

    I hope that helps.

Thank you very much for the quick response and input. I posted those last questions because I was curious if any of the things I thought might be a red flag would be an automatic disqualifyer to OCS. If so, I didn't want to waste the CG's time or my time and I would try the enlistment route instead. I figured it would be better to save the accolades for when I talk to someone in person. Again, thanks for the advice.

Kevin, I have come into trouble with the email issues at the Greensboro office but I did finally get an application from a recruiter. I am currently waiting on my doctors office to mail me my complete medical records so I can fill out the medical history section honestly. I will get it back to you as soon as I get it filled out. I look forward to meeting with you.
