I was talking to a friend who is with her daughter, an OS, in Florida. Britt went to OS A school out of Kodiak and now she is in Florida. Britt said she has a friend in Kodiak that she tried messaging yesterday... but has heard nothing from him. I don't remember what they said the name was, doesn't really matter... I'm hoping he wasn't involved. I guess everyone knows someone, it just hurts more when you know them personally. How is everyone hanging in FG? You said you were going back on duty last night? You're ok? I'm glad you let us know you are safe, my heart truly did skip a beat when I read this initially.

I'm fine. Sent you a PM. Will go into more detail after the press release today.

EDIT: For those worried about friends, understand we were on total lockdown yesterday. No one could leave Commsta until late last night.  Cell phones are not allowed in many areas of Commsta for security reasons, and you don't get service anywhere you are allowed to have a phone. Please be patient as we all received many phone calls and text messages. The cell lines in Kodiak were jammed for a while and the base asked all members to refrain from cell use so LE calls could be made.  Your message may have not gotten received. Please do not panic yet.

    From Admiral Papp.........

    Shipmates,

It is with a heavy heart, that I am writing to you to release the names of our two fallen Shipmates from Communication Station Kodiak. I regret to inform you, that we have lost ET1 James "Jim" Hopkins and BMC Richard "Rich" Belisle (USCG, retired).
Petty Officer Hopkins began his service to the Nation in the U.S. Navy, before transferring into the Coast Guard in 2002. He accumulated over 20 years of active duty service and was assigned to Kodiak for the last three years. Jim is survived by his wife Debra and is the father of two adult children.
Chief Belisle was a long-time resident of Kodiak. He retired from the Coast Guard as a Boatswain Mate Chief after over 20 years of service. He was continuing to serve as a Coast Guard civilian employee. Rich is survived by his wife Nichole and is the father of three adult children.
The investigation into their deaths is ongoing. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead, and is working closely with the Coast Guard Investigative Service, and our other State and Local law enforcement partners.
Senior leadership remains focused on the safety and security of our Kodiak Coast Guard families. We are providing resources to assist our Shipmates and their families through this tragedy and we will continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure they are receiving all necessary support.
As you can imagine this is an extremely difficult time for the Hopkins and the Belisles - please keep them all in your thoughts and prayers.

    Semper Paratus,

    Admiral Bob Papp
    Commandant
    Proud Coastie Mom

Yes, there is a lack of information. But it's not like the CG isn't talking. There just isn't anything to be said. And whatever news source keeps bothering the families, SHAME ON YOU! It was bad enough having reporters call us last night, and news crews out side. GO AWAY! Leave us alone. Let us have peace.

ET1 and Mr. Belisie where part of our group of "Riggers". That is a very close nit shop, and they are truly feeling this loss the most.

As much as I agree that it sucks that is just SOP for the media. I think they are heartless sons of bitches sometimes... but they are just doing a job. I remember in 1986 when the Space Shuttle exploded there were apparently recordings of the crew prior to them actually perishing. The news media insisted those recodrings should be released under the freedom of information act. If there were recordings or not, I do not know, nothing was ever released because NASA refused. I don't care if it was a simple good bye, I love you or actual technical reporting of what went wrong... There was no need for me or anyone outside of NASA or the families to hear. Again, the media just doing their job even if it is despicable.

I do hope they go away soon so you can all find the peace you need to deal with this.

I know that, logically. It's just Kodiak is so small, you can't go to the store without someone asking you questions. In fact they were debating pulling all of us volunteering at an event this weekend because they knew people would just be asking questions. Not sure what they decided on that. All of the city is complaining that we aren't talking. But I was THERE and I don't know much more than anyone else on this island.

I have NO love for the media.  They hate the military and LE for the most part, but LOVE a juicy headline when one of the good guys goes down.  I've dealt with it on the LE side, and am truly sorry for your losses in Kodiak.  Rest in Peace Sheepdogs.  Prayers that they catch this scumbag.

Florida I had the same thing with the 6536 crash. I didn't have decals so I had to park outside the base where they were all setup and they kept asking questions. I had duty that night and went to bring my car inside and they all turned their lights on and kept trying to ask me questions. I just walked by and drove my car. I took off my uniform before going home because I couldn't fill up gas without being asked. Some people were just curious and Mobile is a very supportive CG town(they showed it at the ceremony especially) but some people just want a juicy headline.

IDK but we haven't been asked a single question by the community since we arrived on Monday. On the flight to Kodiak from Anchorage a female was expressing how awful it is and especially in such a small community, but everyone has been really respectful and whatnot at the hotel and grocery stores.

Are you part of the TDY crew?  Just wonderin'.  The questions have mostly gone away, but I think maybe because people know us as Commsta crew, they feel like we would know more. I don't know. I haven't gotten any questions since Monday I think.

Today we at Commsta escorted our fallen brothers to the C-130 that will take them home. It was the single most honorable, proud, and humble moment of my life. We walked down a street with 100's of military from all branches saluting, the fire department raised a flag over the street, and from what I could tell, the Airforce did a fly over (sound was behind me, so I'm not positive, but yeah it definitely sounded like it). May God grant their families peace.

Macie, I'll have to see if I can see them somehow. There are a few pictures on the USCG website, but not of the procession itself, just the caskets in the plane.
