Just found this place and glad I did. Love answering questions about the CG and helping those looking to join. The CG has been great to me. Got picked at Cape May to do do a couple years at the Honor Guard. Got to see some awesome stuff. Was in Obamas innauguation, sporting events, and any service at any Military/Govt facility in the National Cap region you can think of as well as traveling all over the US for various 'jobs.' The HG also sent me to get my commercial drivers license and I got laser eye surgery out of the gig as well.
Went to IS 'A' school and did very well, getting the academic achievement award. Now I'm at the best enlisted IS billet available. Bout all I can say about that.
Glad to be here and meet new folks (as well as my old shipmate from the HG whose been posting on here).

Hi Ken, Is laser eye surgery the "standard" practice in the Honor Guard? I know they didn't allow glasses but I thought contacts were the typical solution. Thanks, |

Laser eye surgery (LASIK pr PRK) is available to all military members at no cost, provided it's done at a military treatment facility. There's some waiting involved, but it's well worth it. I had it done in November of 2008. I need to have it touched up again, but I no longer need to wear glasses or contacts. |

| You can meet the standard, or you can set the standard. It's your choice. |

Not the 'standard' per se. You can't wear glasses, so its the only unit in the CG that will buy you a year's supply of contacts at a time. However, when you're there, you're a priorty 1. Which means the process moves very quick. I submitted my request. Had my in depth eye exam at Bethesda a couple weeks later, and had my surgery within 2 months. In my opinion, to not take advantage of the priority one status would be crazy. While I was at the HG there were about 8 of us that had it done. Healing process is kind of not fun, but well worth it anyway. |
