Unless you want to pay tolls every time you need to go to work I would suggest TRYING to get a place on Staten Island itself. I used Padmapper.com when I was looking and it helped a lot. But there's certain parts of Brooklyn that are nearby and are actually quite nice. Red Hook area is nice too, and has some interesting food places and dives.
