I contacted my Coast Guard recruit and I filled out the Coast Guard Prospect Questionnaire they emailed to me.  On the medical history part I checked that I used an inhaler and the last day it was used was June 11, 2012 (a few days ago).  I had some chemicals mix together while I was cleaning my bathroom and ended up having to get the inhaler that was prescribed by the doctor and used it for 5 days (from June 6-June 11) for treatment.  The recruiter told me this was an automatic DQ and after 1 year I could reapply.  I tried seeing if the year I was told I was disqualified for could count towards that year and a half wait list and they said no.  I'm trying to figure out if there is ANYTHING I can do to get this disqualification reversed or waived.  I am in excellent physical shape and I have no problems breathing.  I am looking to begin a career as a Maritime Enforcement Specialist and I do not want to be waiting 2 and a half years to do so.  Thank you for your time

    Ben Booher.

Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot we can do about the medical standards. The only choice you have is to wait it out.
You can meet the standard, or you can set the standard. It's your choice.

Can't he have asthma tests and submit it for waiver along with the medical report?

Assuming the doc says that the inhaler was used because of x y or z and not because he has a history of asthma in his initial report.

I posted a while ago about Nitric Oxide testing. Not sure of the cost or if it will help.

The temporary DQ isn't for asthma, it's for the actual use of the inhaler. There are timeframes that are required to be met before MEPS will authorize a physical.
You can meet the standard, or you can set the standard. It's your choice.

Okay, well if you can think of anything just let me know. Otherwise I might join the Navy for 4 years then enlist in the Coast Guard, but I would much rather start and stay with the Coast Guard. Thank you again for your help.

There are things you can do, but understand it will be a very slow process, very slow...if the navy will take you now and you need to go now, I would not hesitate...the CG us a hope if a chance...and even if you can get past the inhaler ordeal, the CG recruiter still will look at the whole you and sum you up to all the other hundreds if applicants to see if you are worth putting in front of them or passing on...it is very tough but if it is what you want go for it...but it will not happen fast, probably a year it longer...red tape and MEPS.
