I've been reading a lot about the differences between OCS and enlistment
in the Coast Guard. I was just wondering which approach I should go
with to getting involved.
I really want to serve my country and the Coast Guard's goals and
missions make the most sense to me (protecting our border, international
waters, saving lives, etc). I don't foresee this as being a lifelong
career (though if I find fulfillment doing this, I will definitely
continue), and I want to be useful and effective in what I do. I have
read that enlistees often do grunt work for the first year or more of
assignment until they can strike for an A-School, which doesn't appeal
too much to me (though if I need to do that, I definitely will and do it
to the best of my ability). I have a strong sense of duty and
responsibility, and I will do what is asked of me. I haven't seen too
much about what commissioned officers do, though I've read that if I
have a college degree I should definitely try for it.
Some information about me:
I will be graduating in May 2013 from a small liberal arts school (high-ranking, top 50 in most lists)
I will have dual degrees: BA's in Psychology, and Education Studies, GPA: 3.7
I currently have three jobs during the school year (two of which are
definitely in a leadership capacity, organizing crews of people, in
charge of successes and failures, etc.), so I think I'm good at
organizing my time, and doing all of the things assigned to me
effectively and quickly.
I am an Eagle Scout, and a member of the Order of the Arrow (Boy Scout Honor Society).
What do you guys think? Should I try for OCS? Or should I go enlisted? |

No one here can tell you what is right for you. We can tell you OCS is hard to get in. On the surface, you meet the requirements, but so will many other people. You can apply for OCS and see what happens. You can apply for OCS and still go enlisted if that's the right path for you too. |

I personally went the enlisted route because I wanted a little more control over what kind of job I would have. |

similar situation here. 94 afqt, within 5 credits of my bachelors degree. recruiter advised to go enlisted, gain some time and experience, then apply for ocs. Others say with my score and degree ocs is the smartest option.
What do you guys think. Oh, I guess the baseline question is whether ocs is an option at all right now. |

Nobody on this site can sway you one way or another. The decision is completely yours. This past selection board, 10 people were selected for OCS. 7 came from the enlisted side of the CG and 3 came from the civilian side. The odds are definitely against everyone, but they are still eligible to apply. |

Bells, if you want it, something tells me you won't annoy much before you get it! |
