Hello everyone, I hope this is the right thread for this.
I have been interested in the Coast Guard MSST and I just have some questions about it.

-How long would it take to potentially get assigned to the MSST?

-How difficult would it be, training-wise? What other military job would the difficulty be comparable to? (Marine grunt, AF Officer, Army Ranger....etc) These are just examples...

-What type of training do they go through? (AF Pararescue for example go through the pipeline; EMT, Halo training and such.)

-What would be the most beneficial rating to have to get onto the team? (ME most likely?)

You need to be rated to go to an MSST. So you would need to choose a rating, either strike it (MK/BM) or go to A-school (all of the ratings) and then the billet would need to be availible to you. So It would need to be on the list that the detailer provided to as a SNBM or FNMK (mine did not, but my BM2 had it on his when he was a striker) or it would need to be on the list of picks at A-School.

Then you would need to be top of your A-school class to get that pick, or your detailer would need to be compelled to give you that unit compared to the other strikers.

If you don't get it at this time, then you will need to wait until you are tour complete, about 3-4 years, until you are transferring and then you would compete for it during transfer season. If you were at a land unit, you may or may not get it, if you were afloat, you have a better chance.

Look up Tier 1 and Tier 2 DOG training for what you need to know about training. Once you are in though they just work out all the time to maintain their physical fitness.

I havn't been any other military job so I can not compare to it.

There is also a difference in MSST Waterside and MSST Shoreside. They do different things

Both Waterside and Shoreside get deployed but for different things. Waterside trains other units alot, or supplements other units. Shoreside is kind of more like a Ledlet or Taclet (Cooch correct me if I am wrong).

MEs hold alot of the Tier 1 positions but other ratings can as well. BM, MK and others are also at these units.
Take what you like and leave the rest behind.

Ok, thank you for the help! So, if I understand correctly, it is pretty difficult to get assigned to the team due to it being highly competitive?

Yes, but no more competitive than any other type of unit. Every job has a certain level of competition trying to get it. PATFORSWA, recruiting, company commander, surf stations, XPO/EPO/OIC jobs, etc. every billet has people competing for it.
You can meet the standard, or you can set the standard. It's your choice.
