Hey everyone, sorry in advance if this was already covered.
Ill be reporting to boot in just a few weeks and I was wondering if anyone had any advice (if any exists) on how to set myself up for a future as an ME. I am aware that everything has a pretty significant wait time at this point, and I am prepared for that. This is the rate ive had my sights set on since i started the recruitment process a while back and I would love some input on a route to take to get there.
    Thanks in advance!

Work hard, get your quals done at your unit, stay out of trouble, get your name on the list and be patient.

Like Gears said becoming an ME is a matter of putting your name on the list, and then waiting a few years.
Take what you like and leave the rest behind.

Please don't set your sights solely on ME and fail to look at anything else. There might be a rate out there that you have never even heard of and it might just be what fits even better. Truly look into all rates, including ME.

I know, I'm not usually one to place "all my eggs in one basket" in fact a friend of my father who is now in the reserves took me around a small boat station near by and wanted me to talk to some land locked rates as well. I would really like something that is big on emergency management or LE. Any suggestions on what other rates I should spend more time investigating?

And to the other responses thank you! Working hard and staying committed has been the plan from day one! I didn't know if requesting a certain location/type of unit on the dream sheet would be beneficial to seeing more of that rate.

There are no landlocked ratings. Everyone gets underway at some point. Your rating determines which cutters you can go to.

Land locked rates? LOL That's funny... Maybe MST. The chances of getting underway as an MST is pretty rare. It can happen but it isn't an every other tour kind of option.

To OG's point, it might be helpful to first figure out what you are actually interested in doing - working with guns, doing boardings, driving boats, doing law enforcement, learning skills you can carry to the civilian world, etc, and find the rating that best fits those needs - instead of going at it the other way around.

Well that's precisely why I was looking ay ME. I'm coming from a family of firefighters and volunteered myself for a while but have grown an interest in law enforcement (Kinda making me a black sheep of the house lol) and have always loved working with/learning about/firing weapons. Boardings are something I would love to experience as well.

When I first started looking into the Coast Guard ME was the only rating that interested me as well. After doing intensive research online and talking to my cousin that's a AST, I am dead set on going OS, but I am still open minded about other ratings. Who knows once I get in the fleet I might change my mind. Just try to stay open minded.

Why not GM, then?  Weapons will be your life, plus there's ample shore and underway billets.  People have this idea in their heads that ME's are the only rate that does boardings.  The ME rate has only been around 3 years or so.  What do you think we did for boarding teams before that?  A cutter boarding team will likely be made up of  the OS, FS, MK rates, not just ME's.  As others have stated, don't get tunnel vision when exploring other rates.  As I understand (and the recruiters here can amplify this), the wait list for ME "A" School is 3-4 years.  This means you could complete your first enlistment and not have attended "A" school.

    Just food for thought

Yes 4 years is the wait right now and it's the only one I don't foresee changing. BM or GM are faster and sometimes better LE ratings, they just don't have the "Cool" newness of ME.
