In short, no. Auxiliarists are not allowed to go into the water for any reason while on patrol. The only exception is the swim test for boat crew member and the egres test for air personnel but those tests take place under supervision in a controlled environment (i.e., a pool).

Amorhetleven is correct about Aux. operations. Most Aux. Boat crew and AuxAir personnel are only supposed to get wet during training or when certifying a cold weather Dry Suit or something similar. Going in the water is avoided on Aux.-specific missions. I think the only exception to that might be the PWC “Jet Ski” folks, they can’t really help being in the water a little bit. That is an Aux. qualification and it’s become key to many operations in the Aux., especially in support of some active duty missions like guarding a big public swimming event.

If you want to get certified for swimming or anything like that you'll have to get approval to train with the active duty to get certified to their level of qualification. You remain an Auxiliary personnel but you can qualify for things like boat crew on the 41 foot UTB or 45 foot RB-M. In such cases you will qualify as surface swimmer where you are attached to a harness and line to swim from the boat for rescue. There are specific training requirements and stringent safeguards on this!

This is NOT to be confused with a Rescue Swimmer in a helicopter. Those people are supermen compared to boat surface swimming rescue. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of an Aux. even asking to be allowed to qualify for helicopter rescue swimmer school (Aviation Survival Technician). To become that kind of superman or superwoman you’d already have to be “in superior physical condition” and you’d have to get signatures and permission from everyone from your FC up through DirAux and probably up through the Commandant. In short, not happening.

Qualifying to serve with the active duty folks on their boats (or in any duty) is hard work. You have to measure up and you don’t get any breaks just because you are Aux. You either qualify or you don’t, just like any other Coast Guard personnel. Even so, it is possible for a hard-working, committed Aux. to measure up to do some things. Think it over and focus on the small things first. Get qualified as regular Auxiliary boat crew on Auxiliary boats and then think about more lofty goals.
