So im looking into the AMT rate, will be out of the USMC next friday. My question is this: What happens if it turns out that my skills as a 6152 in the Marines transfers to an AMT rate? I wasn't aircrew so it is highly unlikely i know but i would still like to know. I know all about the whole start over as an E-3 and wait for what seems like forever to class up in "A" school but no one has asked this question so thought i would. Thanks in advance

You still have to go thru all the same processes as everyone else. The biggest benefit you have is that school and other pracs may just be easier for you to complete - but you still have to complete them.

Yep. Doesn't matter what experience you have - you still have to wait with everyone else. There isn't anything one can do to speed that up. The only thing you can do is make sure you get your name on the list as soon as you can. Everyone has to wait at least 4 months. But after that, it's command approval. Depending on the rules of your first unit, you may have to get qualified first. So, get your quals done quickly, and make sure your unit wants to put you on the list.

You'll have to ask a recruiter if you qualify for DEPOT. I am unaware of all the rules.

AMT is probably longer than 36 months. Just be ready to wait for long time.
Take what you like and leave the rest behind.

You will not go to DEPOT, you will go to full boot camp. A rate/job determination to try to go in as an AMT isn't going to fly. The rate is at or above 100% capacity with folks waiting for A-School.
I personally know of two prior Marine mechs who, after they got in, submitted a rate determination package while waiting on the A-School list; both got approved. You can get in and try this route, maybe it works, maybe it doesn't. Also, aircrew training starts after A-School.

Those mechs obviously came in at a different time. The aviation ratings are nowhere near critical, and a rate determination will not be considered for a non critical rate.

AMT was not a critical rate when they did it, nevertheless, it just happened to be the right timing. It is a long shot but he could try. Get in as an E3 and try it, worst case scenario your in the USCG doing something awesome, then you become an AMT to do more awesome things. (Not as awesome as AET though....LOL!!)
