    I believe a hummock is a mound of ice. I'm just guessing here but I think they can be pretty large and are caused by pressure in the ice field maybe? Like a ridge or something? I got the impression after doing some reading that they are not something even an icebreaker would want to encounter so I assume that's why they keep a lookout for them.
