Hello everyone! I am new to this forum, and I have to say that I am already extremely impressed with the amount of support and necessary honesty I have witnessed so far.  I was hoping to get some career advice, a topic that has been on my mind a lot lately.

My boyfriend of almost 6 years is enlisting next year and I couldn't be more thrilled for him! I will graduate with my BA in Psychology in the spring of 2015 and we plan on getting married soon after. I hope to obtain my Master's in Counseling Psychology or a related field (most likely online) and have always dreamed of becoming a marriage and family therapist or any other sort of licensed professional counselor. I love working with people and psychology has always been my passion.

My only concern is that I will have trouble with finding and maintaining a job within my field and pursuing my dream career. I understand that being a military wife really is a full-time job and I've definitely come to terms with the fact that it's definitely not going to be a walk in the park. But I've made a long life commitment to my future coastie and I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make it work for the two of us.

Are there any spouses in any career field, but preferably within the psychology/mental health field, who can give me some advice, info, expertise, anything on the matter? I would appreciate anything you all have got for me.

    Thank you!

You will probably not be able to hang out a shingle and gather permanent patients. You know you might transfer and patients tend to identify with their therapist and it would be hard to "abandon" your clients. However, schools might need a psychologist on staff, you could work with an advocacy group, you could do hospital counseling. My cousin has her Bachelor's in Psych but her Master's in Social Work. She does have her own business, counseling geriatric care patients families. When it comes time to make difficult decisions, she is the one with her patients, their families, laying out options for them. You could get an amazing amount of rounded experience while you are a military wife. Then when he gets out or retires, think of the knowledge you can bring to the table to set up your own private practice. You are right, it won't be easy but not impossible to do something in your chosen career field.

I was a volunteer advocate in Valdez, Alaska for Advocates for Victims of Violence. It was some of the best work I ever did and I didn't earn a penny doing it. You really do get to touch the lives of your clients. Best of luck in your career and your fiancés. You are going at this with exuberance and support, I'm sure it will all work out just wonderfully. Any other questions, let us know. We'll be happy to do what we can.

Thank you so much! It sounds like I've still got plenty of options within the field. This makes me feel sooooo much better! I will definitely be back with any other questions that arise. Thanks again!

You could always work as a coucelor at a VA. I have a friend doing that and she's an Army Wife. She knows that pretty much wherever they get stationed she can transfer and have a job pretty quickly with another VA when they move.
