Just graduated boot. Anyone on here stationed on the Munro or kodiak? How's life on the island? The ship? Any info is appreciated. I'm sure I'll have questions spark.

I lived on Kodiak. It was quite a few years ago but it hasn't changed THAT much. I loved it there. It is isolated but you get used to it. What would you like to know? FloridaGirl only just recently left Kodiak. She might have some more current information.

Really not too much. I have a pretty general idea. However, I do request to know if a vehicle is absolutely necessary, because my recruiter said it would be. Also can I room with shipmates on other cutters in barracks, for example my friend that will be stationed on the Alex Haley?

Yes you need a vehicle. You can buy a Kodiak beater pretty cheap. Get something with 4 wheel drive.

You will be assigned a room in the barracks.
Honor: if you need it defined, you don’t have it.

I would strongly recommend a vehicle. You might not ABSOLUTELY have to have it... but there are going to be times that it will really suck to be without one. But that's a personal thing. You are a few miles out of town. There is a liberty van but that too is limited and might not run when you want to go. So make the decision. FG is right, you can always pick up a good old beater and just use that until you leave and then sell it to the next Coastie. That was our first car on the island. LOL God that truck was a hot mess but it never failed us and eventually we passed it along. I don't know that I would agree that 4 wheel drive is a necessity... I lived in Alaska for 10 years and never owned 4 wheel drive ever. We had a Chevy Chevette, a Chevy Spectrum, a Chevy Lumina, an Oldsmobile Silhouette. I drove all over Kodiak and we lived in Valdez, drove to Anchorage and Fairbanks more times then I care to count in all sorts of weather. Never felt I needed 4 wheel drive. Again, that is one of those personal preferences but if you don't think you need it, don't stress it if you don't have it.

I liked"off" the road system and if the roads weren't plowed I had to park at WalMart and walk up the hill home. But if you live on base you should be fine.
