    Greetings,
I am prior Air Force and prior Army.  (I'm still on terminal leave with the Army)
I am in training to be a school teacher. (I already have a BA in History, I am working on my Teacher Certification)

I am interested in the Air Force Reserves, Air National Guard or Coast Guard Reserves.  I'd like to continue serving my country and keep certain military benefits while pursuing my teaching career.

Welcome...water under the bridge at this point, but you should have tried to get a conditional release from the Army so you wouldn't have had a break in service. That being said, I'll throw my $.02 in. I'd stay away from the NG, as they tend to not be as well funded as the Reserve components, and are subject to call up for all sorts of things. I was Army NG from 86-92 (Indiana and California). I'd say the CGR is your best choice, as CG Reservists are integrated in with AD units. There are no seperate USCGR units (wth the exception of Port Security). You're working alongside the AD guys. Receiving the same training, doing the same job.

    Hi Captkyguy and CPORJM.
    Thank you for your responses.
I'm considering going after a commission with the Coast Guard Reserves.  If I do that, I'll probably wait a year or two.

Right now I'm really busy with an upcoming wedding, my teacher certification classes and starting a civilian job.  I know that if I go that route, I'll need to give it my all.  In the mean time, I may volunteer with the Auxiliary.

Know this about a CGR commission. You are subject to assignment anywhere the CG needs you....at your expense. A friend of mine (now retired) that came into the CGR with me in '01 eventually decided to become a Warrant Officer. The only billet available was Sector Boston. He lived in Southern Cal. For nearly a year, he was flying to Boston to do his drills, before a spot came open in Long Beach, CA. Just food for thought.

Thanks for the warning. That is very good to know. I currently live in Savannah and will be moving to Houston in a few years. Perhaps I should wait until I'm in Houston and a slot opens up on the Texas coast line.
