    Hello helpful forum members,

I discovered a little late in life that serving in the USCG would be my ideal career.  I am now 28, and I had always seen that the maximum age was 27.  However, I was browsing the new GoCoastGuard.com website today and saw the following on the FAQ under qualifications to join:

"Be between the ages of 17-27 (up to age 32 if qualified for attending guaranteed 'A' school) for Active Duty."

This is the first I've seen of anything regarding being qualified for attending "guaranteed 'A' school."  Can anyone tell me what this means?  Is there hope for me after all?

I'm not sure if it matters, but I have a B.A. and anticipate I would score highly enough on the ASVAB to be qualified for all the rates that I am most interested in pursuing.

    Thanks!

Talk with your recruiter. The current fiscal year policy will allow for waivers to be submitted for non-prior service applicants up to 32. However the slots are quickly running out for this fiscal year. If you end up with a good AFQT I don't know why you wouldn't be considered. Having a BA just means you would come in as an E-3.

Your best bet would be to talk to a recruiter about that for the current conditions. But as far as guaranteed A school goes, they usually have that for ratings like FS (Food Service Specialist) and I saw a girl on here get guaranteed OS (Operations Specialist) school.

FS and OS are the only current ratings with the 4 months of service waived. OS, FS, and HS are on the open rate list for experienced members (reservists, prior CG and other service).

Sorry to bump an older thread, but I just wanted to come here to say that I just got word this morning that my age waiver was approved. For anyone who might be in a similar position to me, be persistent and be ready to overcome obstacles (for me, it was both medical hurdles and the age waiver). I am now about to realize a dream that has been years in the making, and am so glad I didn't get discouraged and and that I continued to press on (having an outstanding recruiter also helped!).

Congrats! I was in the age waiver boat as well and got approved. Just goes to show you they are taking qualified applicants up to 32.

Thank you, sir, for your continued words of encouragement and advice.

Edit:  Oh, and on topic of my original post, I am entering as a non-rate.  I had the option of pursuing guaranteed A school for OS or FS, but was able to go the normal route.

Congrats! Make sure you prove to your recruiter that it was worth it.

Age waivers for otherwise qualified quality applicants seem to be rolling along quickly at the moment. We've had two approved in our office in the last couple of weeks.

Thank you, I have every intention of proving I was worth his time and the Coast Guard's approval.

My age waiver only took 4 business days.  I have been pleasantly surprised at how quickly things have moved along for me.  My first contact with the recruiter was only 2 months ago, and even with every issue I've faced, I've already gotten to this point.  I'm very grateful.
