This is only my second post after my intro post so please bear with me. I am currently engaged to my g/f of 6 years, by the time i hope to join the coast guard we will already be married. She is a senior in nursing school and by the time i hope to join the cg she will have already passed her nclex exam and be an RN.  After basic how long can you expect to be at a set station? I ask this because if my fiance would like to get a nursing job near where ever i end up being stationed, my time at that station would be a gigantic factor as to her getting a job.

Depends on the rate your interested in..some schools the wait is only a few months, others a few years.

The time at your first unit truly depends on which rating you end up choosing. The wait list for the various ratings' "A" Schools range from a few months to a few years. Your other option would be to strike (on the job training) your rating, but those options are limited.

Here's the current wait list for all the schools if you'd like to get an idea of how long you could potentially wait for your desired rating...

Thank you for the information. The 3 Ratings i am most interested in are HS, ME, and DC in that order so based on that link you gave the wait times go from the low end to the high end depending on which of those 3 ratings you look at. After A school and you get another station, are you there until the end of your enlistment or are the chances high they will move you ?

It depends on the type of unit you go to after school. Typically cutters are a 3 year tour, while land based stations are usually 4 years. It gets a little more complicated than that though. It definitely can be tough for a spouse to hold a good job for an extended time unfortunately.

If you 're under 6 years when u get orders you have to obligate a full tour. So if it takes you 3 years to get through ME a-school, you'll have to extend out to obligate a full tour to your first unit out of a-school. HS has been about a 2 year wait on average, and DC jumps all over the place but is pretty slow also
Take what you like and leave the rest behind.
