What an awesome outcome of a terrifying and tragic situation! Our A-shift brothers did one heck of a great job...we are so proud of them!
The all call fire tones go off during the dead of sleep in the early morning hours on a chilly morning and the firefighters spring to life without hesitation knowing that a life may hang in the balance of time. They don (get dressed in) their firefighting protective equipment and jump on the fire engine and race to the called address with lights and sirens announcing they are on our way and there to help!
While enoute they can see the fiery orange glow lighting up the dark sky highlighting the solid black column of smoke off in the distance of they sworn protection district. Seriousness sets in and radio traffic intensifies and the first officer to arrive on scene starts to develop his initial action plans and fire ground tactics with his priorities being rescue, exposures (houses next to the fire) confinement and extinguishment, and many other fire ground tactics running through his head.
As they get closer the fiery orange glow is intensifying and causing more and more adrenalin pumping through the veins of each and every firefighter / rescuer enoute, they know this is a big one. Fire is pushing through the roof 15 to 20 feet, is also coming through busted windows...it is hot and a lot of fire. The smoke is raging and forcefully exiting the building through every nook and cranny rising high into the night sky. The heat is extreme, the radiant heat is so threatening to everything close by from inside the house to the houses next door.
The first officer arrives giving a radio size up of what he is seeing, announces his action plans and starts giving working assignments, at which time he is confronted by family announcing their young grand daughter is still inside this fiery beast, that is full of flames and exhaling toxic and deadly black smoke. Life hangs in the balance of time and without hesitation the officer and his firefighter make entry into the little girls bedroom window, directly into the face of the super hot heat, toxic and deadly black smoke. Thy unselfishly risk their lives so that others may live. In zero visibility, they quickly find the little girl who is limp and unconscious with no pulse and not breathing. Fire rescue now becomes a medical life saving situation...what an outstanding and very blessed outcome!
