Has anyone heard when the next OCS packet deadline is? I heard a rumor Feb 2011 but not sure if that is a correct date. I am leaving for bootcamp July 27th but am starting on my OCS packet as soon as I get to my first duty station since I already have a bachelor's degree. Thanks. |

I too heard the Feb 2011 rumor. But as far as I know, it's just that, a rumor. |

They are taking them but the acceptance rate is slim to none. I hope Feb 2011 is correct bc that would give me just enough time to complete it after bootcamp. |

I have been on the road for the last week moving to Buffalo, As of the day I left, the new panel dates have not been announced. I suspect sometime in late July or early August time frame IF they have a panel. This is a big IF. Keep checking the Gocoastguard.com website for the release.

I thought that if you decided to join "the Enlisted ranks", whether you have a degree or not, you would have to make E-5 in your first four year enlistment to be eligible to apply for OCS. Old Guard would know, I think her X-Husband did this. The idea I got was that if you Enlisted with a Bachelors instead of applying to OCS directly as a Civilian, you had to prove yourself within the Enlisted ranks because you joined the Enlisted ranks. Am I wrong? |

Am I wrong? That's not what my recruiter told me. The way I understood it, with my degree, I can put in a packet for OCS as soon as it opens back up, enlisted or not. |

Oh brother, my legacy lives on! LOL My ex did go enlisted than officer but all he had when he went to OCS was an Associates Degree. He had to wait for that magical E-5 mark. But Jessica is right, with that Bachelor's Degree, she is eligible to apply to both enlisted & officer at the same time. If she gets enlisted first & is in the middle of boot camp, she can leave for OCS if a spot opens up. This just happened recently, they graduated a girl out of boot I think it was a week early because she had to report to New London for OCS. All my posts are gone & yet I'm remembered... I'm either flattered or embarassed that I talk too much! (No comment needed from Jen on that one! :-) ) |

Yes, you can come in enlisted and submit your OCS package at the same time. If you get selected, you will be discharged upon reporting to the Academy for OCS. If you aren't selected, you remain enllisted and then have to wait for the E-5 with 4 years in requirement. The bonus is that you will be in the Coast Guard already. |

And as far as the next OCS board, it doesn't look like there will be a Fall 2010 board. Chances are, that it will be next Spring sometime. |

My son put in an OCS Packet in 2008, He didn't get picked and decided to enlist in September 08.....Graduated Boot in November..was at his first assignment for a few days and the was told his 2nd OCS Packet had been selected. In January 09 he was at OCS! Quite a whirlwind! There were quite a few in his class who were recent Boot Camp Grads. The Bachelors degree was the factor for acceptance ( plus the total scores, applicatons ect ) He enlisted partly because he was getting too old for the maximum age for OCS at the time. Funny that raised the age limit when he was at BOOT! He is now an Ensign, but will be a LTJG soon!Best Wishes to those who are applying! |

That's the way it was in the middle of the last century...can't speak for now. Doing a hitch and making PO2, which somebody suggested is the curent standard, is tough, but not unfair.
As far as what you have been told, my son drinks coffee from a mug that reads: "You can trust me, I'm a reporter." Substitute "Recruiter." |
