I am a relatively new member from Corpus Christi, TX. that has been reading the forum regularly for about 3 months now. I plan on starting boot camp June 2nd, 2015 and am looking forward to my future in the Coast Guard. I am 21 years old and have recently graduated with my Bachelors in Environmental Science w/ a Criminal Justice minor. I really just wanted to thank the moderators and regular users that provide information on this forum, it has helped me make decisions and answered so many of my questions. I cannot wait to become a part of the Coast Guard family!

    Thank you everyone,
    Bdobby

I just came from being in corpus for 3.5 years on an 87. Do you have a desire to go back there after BC?

I actually do not have the desire to come back to Corpus after bc, but I am ready for the possibility lol, also it could be worse! Why? How was your experience in the body of christ?

I had a blast there. Lots of Law enforcement and learned a lot about how great boat life is. I lived in the barracks which wasn't too bad.

Really? I actually worked with Texas Game Wardens doing law enforcement all around the coastal bend. Do you mind elaborating what type of LE ya'll did? As in safety inspects, fisheries enforcement?
Personally I hope that I am given the opportunity to perform LE duties with in the CG, also I am unsure of which rating to take on. What was your rating? (again if you don't mind me asking).

    Thanks

We did a lot of fisheries and lancha's. Pretty much just illegal fishing and typical CG boardings checking safety equipment and running names. I'm an Operations Specialist now.

Thanks for the response! Now I am going to pick your brain a bit if you don't mind... Did you request LE oriented work while in boot camp? I know the needs of the service prevail but I am trying to maximize my chances of participating in as much LE as possible as a non-rate. Any tips? Were you interested in OS from the start?

Any answers are appreciated and its nice to know that the CG was in Corpus, I thought all we had was an Air Station.

You are way over thinking this. You are so set on attempting to do LE work what are you going to do when you end up in Topeka at the payroll center and you are doing paperwork?? You will be one very disappointed and disgruntled Coastie. Remember nonrate time is just a stepping stone. You aren't locked into your career by what you do as an E2 or E3. Take where they send you and make the absolute best of it, learn all you can about whatever type of unit you are at. Also, your higher priority right now should be learning your required knowledge and making sure you are physically ready. You don't pass boot camp it won't matter what you wanted, you'll be back home.

Yes ma'am! Req knowledge down! Physical fitness exceeded! Just asking questions during the wait for boot I promise that if I end up in Topeka doing paperwork I will be the most enthusiastic office Coastie they have seen!

I didn't even have a clue about L/E when I was in boot camp. I only got to see it firsthand on the boat and I loved it. If you let your current command know at your unit when you report in that you are interested in it and show you really want to do it, they will hook you up with whatever they can.
