I am 27, married and have a baby on the way in July. I will be taking a pay cut joining the USCG but I needed to fulfill my dream. I knew I may have had a hard time passing the PIP test but I passed the Farnsworth Lantern test and I'm very happy that I can now qualify for all the jobs.

My wife is new to the United States and she does not have any family here nor much support from anyone from my family. She's going to basically be all alone with the baby and dog while I'm gone. I know it will be hard for her for the first two months.

I have studied at a university for 3 years and basically have 1 in a half years left to graduate, unfortunately I could not wait to graduate. So far the plans are that this will be my career and life for the next 20 years.

I don't know anyone in the coast guard and I don't have any close family members that have served in any branch of the military as we are all first generation Americans.

Greetings and welcome to the forum. Have you actually spoken to a recruiter yet? If I recall correctly, the CG doesn't use the FALANT for testing for color blindness, so you will have to use the test that's administered at MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station, the place where your medical exam is done).

You need to make absolutely sure your wife is good with this decision. The fact that she's new to the US and that she's expecting are hard enough, but couple that with the fact that you'll be in boot camp for 8 weeks, and she could really be facing a tough time. Something else to know is that you may be assigned to a cutter as your first duty station out of boot camp. You could potentially graduate and then be gone for a 90 day patrol soon after. Is she willing to accept that? I'm not trying to discourage you at all, but just point out the unique set of circumstances you're in and to make sure you've really given this a lot of thought.

You need to get in touch with a recruiter immediately if you're serious about this. Since you're in L.A., you have two options. If you're in the San Fernando Valley, the Ventura office is an option, otherwise you'll contact the office in Norwalk. http://www.gocoastguard.com/about-u...CA#results

    Best of luck!

Thank you very much for all the advice.  Definitely I'm going into something that is going to completely change our lifestyle as we are about to have a baby.  We actually discussed doing this years ago, and I should have done it before she was here.  We agreed on having a baby before I go so she's not alone.  I am hoping that my unit will be at a location where we can have housing on base, that way there will be other coastie spouses she can talk with.

I got in touch with the Norwalk office and I do live in the San Fernando Valley.  I already went through MEPS and just need to go back on Tuesday to get my ears lavaged.  I did not pass the PIP but then was administered the Farnsworth Lantern test (otherwise known as FALANT) and I passed.  My recruiter wasn't absolutely sure that the FALANT test would suffice the normal color vision requirement, but when I called back another recruiter picked up and he said that it should be fine and his belief was the secondary test is sufficient.

Thank you for all the advice, you are all very pleasant.
