By way of introduction, I am a mid-career professional with advanced degrees and long-term volunteer experience. Eager to participate in the Auxiliary, I contacted two local flotillas and am scheduled to attend a meeting with at least one at the time of this writing. My interests are in OS, specifically public affairs and outreach. I've reviewed all materials sent my way, including those available at the national website, such as the New Member Reference Guide. I believe that I have everything fairly well in hand, but hoped that those more familiar with the AUX might clarify a few things:
(1) As a volunteer organization, I understand that there are a number of criteria to join a flotilla to gain AP status. I am trying to figure out whether this is more like fraternity rush, in which at some point you are offered the opportunity to apply to a specific flotilla by the FSO-HR or whether it is a matter of 'sign up if you like what you see.'
(2) Although I might be reading too much into this, I am a bit worried about the PSI. I've never been arrested or convicted, but have received a traffic ticket or two (speeding and turning on a red) and am wondering whether the AUX considers these to be infractions, minor misdemeanors or misdemeanors and whether these would preclude me from membership. Not saying that anyone would want to ride with me at the wheel, but wanted to make sure I was up front about the situation.
(3) Do all prospective members undergo the 'big' PSI or do those solely wanting to serve in an OS capacity undergo the 'small' (fingerprint only) PSI?
I do apologize for the nature of my questions. However, I do want to make the most of this volunteer opportunity if permitted and to ensure that I put my best foot forward. Thank you in advance for your time and responses!
