Well not knowing what the situation is, and I'm not asking you to divulge, there are a few avenues. I also don't know what your Coastie is doing. Still in boot camp?? In A School? At his first unit or close to retirement? There are multiple factors that can be played out here. You know your family member best... For my family, I would pick up the phone and call my son... Son, this is what's happening, you need to come home/you needn't worry this is just an FYI call/you need to worry a little but take no action at this time. I don't know what your Coastie can handle or can't through a phone call. If someone has passed and your Coastie is on a cutter, contact the Red Cross. They will know the proper channels to reach out to your Coastie's command and get them home, if necessary. Same if someone had a traffic accident and they are hurt, your Coastie is in boot camp... if it is life threatening, you will want to contact the Red Cross or base chaplain in Cape May. If someone was in a fender bender, has a broken leg but there is no imminent death, then you can just tell them after boot or write them a letter "Guess what your goofy sister did to her new car..." enclose a quick picture of sis smiling, pointing at a cast, this way a recruit can see, geez she is hurt but she is fine...

Again, not knowing the particulars, not knowing your Caostie, not knowing where they are currently assigned... There is no RIGHT answer. Also, be sure your family is not overreacting to a situation. I have a very, very good friend that is an incredible hypochondriac. If she gets an eye twitch, she must have cancer of the eye socket and she will be blind by dawn, she runs off to the doctor... meanwhile, pollen count was just high that day and her eye twitched. I'm not saying you don't have real issues, you might. Just weigh the circumstances...

If you would like to PM me, possibly I can help a little more. If not, that's perfectly fine as well. Just use your best judgment. No one knows what your Coastie can handle and what he/she can't more than his/her own family members.
